Chapter 9 - The Payment Before Lily

The payment was $250,000.

Purpose:

SUCCESSION CONTINGENCY.

Recipient account hidden behind layers of corporate entities.

Diane swore she had never seen it.

I didn’t trust her.

But Michael noticed a detail only she would know.

Diane’s authentic approval code ended 17B.

The payment used 71B.

Someone had reversed the digits.

A forger imitating without understanding.

Then I remembered the black envelope.

The hotel desk where I found it had been prepared for that evening’s gala.

Who placed it there?

No staff appeared in the video prompt, but in the expanded story we traced internal hotel records.

The envelope had been requested through an old executive protocol.

Requester name:

Daniel Vale.

Michael stared.

“I didn’t request anything.”

Someone was using his dead identity.

The same identity William created.

I began to understand.

Whoever inherited William’s hidden operation needed Daniel Vale to remain legally dead.

But Lily’s birth reopened the Bellmont succession chain.

My daughter’s existence forced dormant records into review.

That threatened everything.

Diane had been scared.

Not only of losing the hotel.

Of someone else discovering that Lily existed.

“Is that why you wanted her?” I asked.

Diane looked at Lily sleeping nearby.

“I wanted control of her trust interest before they found out.”

“Who is they?”

“I don’t know.”

I almost shouted.

Then she said:

“William never worked alone.”

Michael laughed bitterly.

“Convenient.”

Diane opened another vault drawer.

Inside were photographs.

William.

Harold.

Charles.

Edward.

Caroline.

And one unidentified woman.

Young.

Dark hair.

Standing beside William repeatedly.

On the back of one photo:

MARA B.

Michael froze.

“No.”

“What?”

He stared.

“William had a daughter.”

I had never heard of her.

Neither had Diane.

Michael explained that his adoptive father once mentioned a daughter who died before Michael came to live with him.

Name:

Mara.

No photographs in their home.

No grave visits.

No stories.

Just absence.

But the woman in the picture would have been in her twenties after Michael’s adoption.

“She didn’t die.”

Likely not.

Then we found company filings.

Mara Bennett became director of Bennett Legal Holdings after William’s death.

Under another name:

Mara Black.

The hidden company receiving Bellmont money still had an active beneficiary.

Mara.

Why continue her father’s scheme?

Money was one answer.

But the files suggested something more.

William’s private will left Mara only one asset.

Custodial rights to Daniel Michael Vale’s legal identity.

Michael stared at the page.

“What does that even mean?”

It meant William treated Michael’s erased identity like property.

Then I noticed a second name on the custody agreement.

If Daniel produced descendants, their Bellmont interests would remain under Bennett administration until released.

Michael looked at Lily.

“No.”

Diane whispered:

“That’s why I said she belongs to the family.”

I turned on her.

“You knew?”

“I knew someone would claim her.”

Then Michael finally understood.

Our daughter wasn’t merely the next Bellmont beneficiary through me.

She was also the descendant of Daniel Vale through him.

Lily united both branches.

May you like

For the first time in thirty years, one child held claims through Caroline Bellmont’s line and Charles Vale’s line.

Whoever controlled Lily could control everything.
