Chapter 14 - The Final Bellmont Gala

Everything returned to the balcony.

That felt appropriate.

The place where Lily nearly fell.

The place where Diane lost control.

The place where I first held up the USB.

Only now I understood what the black envelope truly represented.

Not ownership.

A chain of people trying to pass truth forward without trusting one another enough to say it directly.

We arranged Evelyn’s legal review remotely.

Her competency was reassessed independently.

She was lucid.

Sharp.

Angry.

Very angry.

Within forty-eight hours, her guardianship was challenged.

Mara’s control weakened.

The Bellmont trust froze all executive transfers.

Diane lost unilateral authority.

Michael’s identity case reopened.

My mother’s beneficiary claim was restored posthumously.

Mine activated.

Lily’s future interest was protected.

For the first time, nobody in the family could move Bellmont assets alone.

Then Mara called Diane.

We listened on speaker.

No threats.

Just one sentence:

“You chose Emma.”

Diane whispered:

“No. I chose my grandson.”

“What grandson?”

Michael went still.

Diane closed her eyes.

She had misspoken.

Mara laughed.

“Tell them.”

The call ended.

I stared.

“Grandson?”

Lily was a girl.

Michael and I had no other children.

Diane looked broken.

“There was another baby.”

Not mine.

Michael’s.

Before me.

My husband sat down.

“What?”

At twenty-four, Michael dated a woman named Rebecca Shaw.

She became pregnant.

Diane interfered.

Told Rebecca Michael wanted nothing to do with the child.

Told Michael Rebecca terminated the pregnancy.

Both lies.

The baby was born.

A boy.

Diane arranged financial support secretly.

Why?

She claimed she feared the child would activate Daniel Vale’s lineage before she had control of the trust.

So she hid him.

Michael looked at his mother with something beyond anger.

“You stole my son.”

“I protected him.”

“Stop saying that.”

The boy would be eleven now.

His name:

Daniel Shaw.

Named after Michael’s birth identity.

Mara knew.

Of course she knew.

If Daniel Shaw existed, Lily was not Michael’s only descendant.

The succession structure changed again.

Maybe Lily didn’t unite the branches exclusively.

Maybe someone else held equal rights.

Then Diane revealed the cruelest part.

Mara had been funding Daniel’s upbringing through Bennett accounts.

Not from kindness.

Leverage.

Michael whispered:

“Where is he?”

“I don’t know anymore.”

He stood.

“Find him.”

“We will.”

He turned toward me.

I saw fear in his face.

Not that I would be angry.

That I would leave.

I was angry.

But the child was not his lie.

He had been lied to too.

“I’m not blaming you for a son you didn’t know existed.”

His eyes filled.

“But I am still blaming you for every truth you chose not to tell me.”

He nodded.

Fair.

Then the hotel projector suddenly activated.

No one had touched it.

A live video appeared.

A man sat in a dark room.

Older.

Gray at the temples.

But I knew his eyes.

My father.

Edward.

Alive.

He looked into the camera.

“Emma, if you can see this, Mara has decided to finish what William started.”

I stopped breathing.

Then someone stepped behind him.

Only a hand appeared.

Female.

Edward looked toward her.

“Mara, don’t bring the boy into this.”

Michael went white.

The boy.

May you like

His son.

Then the screen went black.
