Chapter 13 - Why Vivienne Knew the Phrase
Before opening final envelope, Ronan confronted Vivienne.
“How did you know the key was buried with my father?”
She admitted father told her.
Graham had helped design funeral myth.
He instructed funeral photographer capture duplicate key on Alexander’s chest.
Then removed it before burial.
Why stage?
To make everyone believe Unit 7 permanently inaccessible after Alexander’s death.
Meanwhile real keys remained distributed.
So Vivienne’s line at gala wasn't supernatural knowledge.
Family secret.
She used it to destabilize Ronan.
But why did she smile when real key fell?
Because Graham told her:
“If Mercer key ever resurfaces, Alexander’s second plan survived.”
Second plan?
Legacy Reserve.
Employee governance.
Hale influence weakened.
Vivienne should have feared it.
Why smile?
Because she believed Ronan would discover his father trusted maid’s family more than him.
She wanted humiliation.
Relationship had become competition.
Then Ivy explained why she stopped.

Vivienne looked.
“What sentence?”
“About burial.”
Graham’s private note to Marian included phrase.
If Vivienne knew exact wording, she had read documents she claimed never saw.

Then Ronan asked whether she became engaged partly to access Blackwood records.
“Yes.”
Silence.
“And partly because I loved you.”
Ronan looked away.
Both can be true.
Then Lena asked:
“Did you know Ivy had key?”
“No.”
“Did you know my dad was looking?”
“Yes.”
“Did you threaten him?”
Vivienne said:
“I told him if he stole company documents, I’d have him prosecuted.”
He interpreted threat, left.
Not kidnapping.
Then Michael confirmed.
Vivienne was hostile but not responsible for disappearance.
He chose hide.
Again.
Then final envelope opened?
Not yet. Alexander instruction says all four parties must consent: Ronan, Ivy, Vivienne/Hale counsel successor, Helen independent trustee. They do.
Inside first page:

So key never gives Ivy fortune.
Then second:

Ivy, as Marian successor, had veto.
Not control.
Power to prevent unilateral access.
Then final sealed page remained.
Marked:
READ ONLY AFTER RONAN ANSWERS ONE QUESTION:
If the Blackwood name disappeared tomorrow, what would you still believe belongs to you?
Ronan sat with that.
Company?

Shares?
Legacy?
He finally answered:
“What I earned. Not what people were forced to give my family.”
Ivy looked at Helen.
Helen nodded.
