Chapter 1 - The Key on the Ballroom Floor

The champagne tower began to fall before anyone understood what was happening.

Lena saw it first.

Her face went white.

She froze.

Ivy didn’t.

The maid threw herself across the polished marble, pulled the child backward, and took the impact of shattered glasses and spilled champagne across her uniform.

The child was safe.

Lena stared at the wreckage.

Then at Ivy.

Ivy looked once into the young catering assistant’s terrified eyes.

And stepped forward.

“I did it.”

One sentence.

One lie.

Vivienne Hale stormed across the ballroom.

“You’re finished here.”

She raised the riding crop.

The first strike landed across Ivy’s shoulder.

Her navy uniform tore.

Ivy cried out.

Vivienne lifted the crop again—

and a wet black sleeve cut between them.

Ronan Blackwood’s hand closed around it.

The ballroom went silent.

Rain ran from his formal coat onto the marble.

His gray eyes moved from Ivy—

to Vivienne.

Lena suddenly rushed forward.

“Stop! It was my fault!”

Vivienne turned sharply.

Ronan knocked the crop away.

Then his gaze dropped to the diamond on Vivienne’s hand.

“Give me the ring.”

Her expression collapsed.

Nobody moved to defend her.

Humiliated, Vivienne slapped Ronan, tore the diamond free and hurled it at him.

Lena helped Ivy away.

Then something slipped from Ivy’s torn pocket.

CLINK.

An old brass key.

Ronan looked down.

Blackwood crest.

Not the modern version.

The old crest.

The one his father, Alexander Blackwood, had used on private estate property.

Ronan bent and picked it up.

Vivienne saw it.

And smiled.

“That key was buried with your father.”

Ronan froze.

Ivy stopped walking.

She did not turn around.

Ronan stared at the brass.

Alexander Blackwood had been buried eight years earlier.

Ronan himself had watched the coffin lowered into the ground.

The key had been placed on his father’s chest before the casket was sealed.

Ronan remembered because Alexander had once told him:

“When this key is buried with me, one part of Blackwood dies with it.”

Ronan looked toward Ivy.

“Where did you get this?”

She remained facing away.

Then, very quietly:

“Your father gave it to me.”
