Chapter 7 - Diane’s Inheritance

The trust wasn’t created for Sabrina.

Not initially.

The original beneficiary had been Diane Carter.

Robert’s younger sister.

Margaret’s daughter.

Weeks before Diane disappeared, Margaret amended the trust.

If Diane died or could not be located for twenty years, beneficial ownership would pass to Diane’s closest living descendant.

Naomi looked at Sabrina.

“You.”

Sabrina stared.

“I’m not Diane’s descendant.”

Elaine began crying again.

Robert slowly turned toward his wife.

“What?”

Elaine whispered:

“Diane was Sabrina’s mother.”

The room stopped.

Sabrina felt as if her body had remained seated while the rest of her fell through the floor.

“No.”

Elaine reached for her.

Sabrina moved away.

“You said—”

“I raised you.”

“That’s not what I asked.”

Elaine cried harder.

Diane gave birth to Sabrina.

Elaine was her closest friend.

After Sabrina was born, Diane suffered severe postpartum complications and depression.

Elaine helped.

Then the warehouse confrontation happened.

Diane disappeared.

Elaine took Sabrina temporarily.

Then permanently.

“Who was my father?”

Elaine looked toward Robert.

“Christopher’s father.”

Sabrina’s stomach twisted.

“No.”

Robert stood immediately.

“Which father?”

Elaine shook her head.

“Not Florence’s husband.”

Christopher’s legal father, Michael Hale, had died when Christopher was ten.

But Elaine clarified:

“Gregory.”

Silence.

Sabrina stared.

“Gregory Sloan was my father?”

“Yes.”

Robert’s face filled with horror.

Gregory had been married to Diane.

Legally.

So Sabrina was their child.

Florence claimed Gregory was Margaret’s son.

If true, that would mean a catastrophic family relationship.

But Naomi interrupted.

“Claims aren’t evidence.”

Good.

No assumption.

DNA testing became necessary.

Then another question:

Why had Elaine told Sabrina she was her daughter?

Because Diane made her promise.

“If anything happens, take Sabrina.”

Robert whispered:

“You knew this when you married me?”

Elaine nodded.

“I didn’t know how to tell you that your missing sister’s baby was alive.”

Robert looked devastated.

“You let me adopt my own niece without knowing.”

“Yes.”

Another relationship built on withheld truth.

Sabrina could see history repeating everywhere.

Then Christopher arrived at Naomi’s office.

He came alone.

No Florence.

He stayed across the room.

Sabrina said:

“You knew Diane was my mother?”

Christopher shook his head.

“I knew there was a missing beneficiary named Diane.”

“Did you know I might be connected?”

“Not until yesterday.”

“Florence?”

His face tightened.

“She knew.”

Of course.

Florence knew Sabrina was Diane’s child.

That explained the suitcase searches.

The hostility.

The obsession with property.

If Sabrina found the key and learned her parentage, Florence’s control over the house and trust would collapse.

Then Christopher put a folder on the table.

“I took this from Mom’s safe.”

Inside was a birth certificate.

Sabrina’s original name:

Sabrina Sloan.

Mother:

Diane Carter Sloan.

Father:

Gregory Sloan.

No ambiguity.

Then a second page.

A handwritten note from Diane.

If Florence tells Sabrina that Gregory was Margaret’s son, she is lying.

Sabrina stared.

Why would Diane write that?

Because Florence had apparently been spreading the claim even before the warehouse incident.

Naomi turned the page.

DNA testing from twenty-nine years earlier.

Gregory was not Margaret’s biological child.

The supposed incestuous secret was fabricated.

Why?

To frighten Diane into giving up rights to the trust.

Florence had been manipulating inheritance long before Sabrina was old enough to speak.

Then Sabrina found one final note:

If I disappear, Florence didn’t do it alone.

Below it:

Ask Christopher’s father what he saw.

Christopher went pale.

“My father died twenty-four years ago.”

May you like

Naomi looked at him.

“Are you sure?”
