Chapter 5 - The Night Margaret Vanished

Sabrina’s mother was named Elaine.
For thirty-one years, Sabrina knew her as a quiet public-school librarian.
Before marriage, Elaine had worked part-time for Margaret.
Not as a bookkeeper.
As a tenant coordinator.
She collected complaints from residents and passed them to maintenance teams.
That placed her near Florence.
Near Gregory.
Near Margaret.
“What happened that night?” Sabrina asked.
Elaine folded both hands on the table.
“Margaret called me.”
“Why?”
“She thought Florence was preparing to transfer money.”
“Did she?”
“Yes.”
Margaret asked Elaine to meet at the warehouse.
She planned to confront Gregory and Florence.
Elaine begged her not to.
Margaret refused.
When Elaine arrived, Gregory was already there.
Florence too.
They were arguing about documents.
Then Margaret entered.
“She accused them of stealing.”
“What did Florence say?”
“She said the money belonged to Gregory.”
“Why?”
Elaine hesitated.
“Because Gregory claimed he was Margaret’s son.”
Sabrina frowned.
Robert stood.
“What?”
Elaine looked at him.
“You didn’t know.”
“My mother had another son?”
Elaine shook her head.
“Gregory claimed it. Margaret said it was a lie.”
The argument escalated.
Then Diane arrived.
Robert’s missing sister.
She confronted her husband.
Gregory grabbed her.
Margaret intervened.
Elaine remembered shouting.
A metal shelf falling.
Then darkness.
“When I woke up, Margaret and Diane were gone.”
“Gregory?”
“Gone.”
“Florence?”
“Still there.”
“What did she say?”
“She told me Diane attacked Margaret and fled.”
Elaine believed her.
At least initially.
Then Florence offered money for silence.
Elaine refused.
Then threatened Sabrina.
Sabrina stared.
“I wasn’t born yet.”
“You were.”
Silence.
Sabrina’s head snapped up.
“What?”
Elaine began crying.
“You were six months old.”
Robert’s chair moved backward.
“I met you when Sabrina was nearly one.”
Elaine nodded.
Robert stared.
“You told me her father abandoned you.”
“Yes.”
Sabrina felt cold.
“Who was my father?”
Elaine looked toward the photograph Christopher sent.
Gregory.
Sabrina’s stomach turned.
“No.”
Elaine shook her head.
“No.”
“Then who?”
“I don’t know.”
Sabrina stared.
“You don’t know?”
Elaine wiped her face.
“It wasn’t consensual.”
The room went silent.
Robert moved toward her.
She held up one hand.
“Please.”
He stopped.
Sabrina understood enough.
Not details.
She didn’t need them.
Elaine had been harmed before meeting Robert.
Margaret knew.
Protected her.
Helped her hide.
That explained the relationship.
“Did Florence know?”
“Yes.”
“So she knew who I was.”
“Yes.”
“Christopher?”
“I don’t know.”
Then Sabrina’s phone rang again.
Christopher.
She answered.
“Where are you?”
“At my parents’.”
“You need to come home.”
“No.”
“Sabrina, Margaret is manipulating you.”
“You hit me.”
Silence.
“That was wrong.”
“You hit me because I stopped Florence from searching my suitcase.”
“I know.”
“Why does she search it?”
Christopher didn’t answer.
Sabrina’s pulse slowed.
“Why?”
He finally whispered:
“Because she thought you might accidentally take something Margaret hid in the house.”
Sabrina froze.
“What?”
“Florence hasn’t been searching your suitcase for stolen silverware.”
May you like
Christopher’s voice changed.
“She’s been looking for a key.”
