Chapter 9 - The final descent

The atmosphere inside the grand, mahogany-paneled boardroom of the law firm was suffocatingly tense. The morning sun glared through the towering windows, offering no warmth to the impending legal execution of the Hale dynasty. Ethan arrived looking like a king preparing for battle, wearing an immaculate black suit that emphasized his broad, muscular shoulders, his dark hair swept back flawlessly, his jaw set in stone. Emily walked beside him, a vision of sharp, untouchable elegance in a tailored emerald-green dress that perfectly matched her eyes. They did not look like a defeated couple arriving to sign away their empire; they looked like predators stepping into a cage.

Victoria was already seated at the polished table, radiating a poisonous, triumphant calm. She wore a severe, black couture suit, a string of heavy pearls resting against her neck. She offered Ethan a sympathetic, condescending smile that made Emily’s blood boil. The lead attorney, Sterling, sat at the head of the table, flanked by a younger, sharp-featured junior partner named Julian Vance. Vance had been a quiet, relentless force during the initial execution of the freeze order, meticulously managing the paperwork while Sterling delivered the speeches.

Ethan and Emily took their seats. Sterling cleared his throat, opening the sealed legal folder with agonizing slowness. Mr. Hale, as per the stipulations of the emergency codicil, the forensic audit has concluded. The evidence of massive financial mismanagement and unauthorized offshore transfers is overwhelming. To protect the shareholders, the court has authorized the immediate transfer of all controlling assets into a blind trust managed by this firm. You are required to sign the relinquishment documents.

Ethan did not reach for the expensive fountain pen placed before him. He leaned back in his leather chair, steepling his fingers, his piercing blue eyes locking onto the junior partner, Julian Vance. It is a brilliant strategy, Ethan said, his voice echoing smoothly in the quiet room. Create a crisis, frame the current CEO for the mismanagement, and utilize a buried legal clause to legally steal a fifty-billion-dollar empire. I applaud the ingenuity.

Victoria scoffed, a harsh, dismissive sound. Ethan, please stop embarrassing yourself. Sign the papers and accept your failure with whatever dignity you have left. Ethan ignored her, keeping his gaze fixed on the junior partner. But you made one critical error, Julian, Ethan continued. You used your real first name. It was a sentimental mistake, honoring the father whose legacy you are trying to steal back.

The junior partner, Julian Vance, froze. The pen slipped from his fingers, clattering onto the mahogany table. Sterling looked confused, but Victoria’s face drained of all color, her icy blue eyes widening in sudden, unadulterated terror. Ethan leaned forward, placing a thick, heavily encrypted dossier onto the table. My wife is exceptionally gifted at finding things people wish to remain buried. We spent the night cross-referencing your birth records, Julian. Or should I say, Julian Hale II. The secret biological son of Victoria and the true founder of this company. You aren't just a lawyer managing a blind trust. You are the sole beneficiary of that trust. You and your mother orchestrated this entire freeze to legally transfer my company directly into your hands.

The boardroom erupted into chaotic silence. Sterling looked horrified, realizing his firm had been used to execute a massive, illegal corporate coup. Julian Vance stood up abruptly, his arrogant composure shattering into desperate anger. You stole it first! Julian yelled, slamming his hands on the table. Arthur stole the company from my father! He locked him in a cage in Switzerland and left us with nothing! This empire belongs to my blood!

Your father was a violent, unstable man who would have destroyed this company, Ethan fired back, his voice a roaring thunderclap that silenced the room. And your mother is a sociopath who murdered my parents, imprisoned an innocent man, and attempted to drown my wife in a swimming pool to protect her secrets! Ethan stood up, his towering frame dominating the space. He gestured to the heavy double doors of the boardroom. The doors swung open, and four federal agents from the FBI's financial crimes division marched into the room, followed closely by the frail, elderly archivist, Elias, who held a box of original, unredacted corporate documents.

Victoria realized the checkmate was absolute. She didn't scream or beg. With a sudden, terrifying burst of speed, she lunged across the table, snatching a heavy brass letter opener, her eyes burning with homicidal madness as she aimed directly for Emily’s throat.
