Chapter 10 - Rose’s Plan
Rose did not deny it.
“I wanted instrument opened.”
“You used my daughter,” Emma said.
“I never put her in danger.”
“You manipulated condition around her.”
“Yes.”
Emma’s voice hardened.
“You don’t get to call that harmless.”
Rose apologized.
No excuses.
She had learned Diane still possessed Evelyn’s ring and feared stewardship history would vanish after Diane’s death.
Rose commissioned clasp using impression Charles had once given Evelyn.
Then anonymously notified Agnes that condition existed.
She expected Nathan to deliver envelope.
She did not expect Diane’s violence.
Michael asked:
“Why not simply tell us truth?”
“Because I tried contacting Diane six months ago. She threatened to challenge Emma’s adoption records publicly if I approached.”
Diane denied threat.
Rose produced voicemail.
Diane’s voice:
Stay away from Emma. If you drag Evelyn back into this family, I will make sure everyone knows exactly why Margaret had to take her.
Emma looked wounded.
“What exactly why?”
Rose swallowed.
“I was an alcoholic when you were born.”
Silence.
She had been sober thirty-two years.
At twenty-seven she was unstable and unable to care safely for infant.
Margaret stepped in.
No sinister adoption.
No stolen inheritance.
Rose had carried shame for decades.
Diane weaponized it.
Emma’s anger shifted but did not disappear.
“You still used Lily as legal trigger.”
“Yes.”
“That was wrong.”
“Yes.”
Rose accepted it.
That mattered.
Then Michael examined bracelet.
Its crest matched envelope and ring.
Three matching symbols.
Diane’s panic now made sense structurally.
Envelope + Evelyn seal + custodian seal could establish provenance of Harrison instrument.
Not execute it automatically.
But enough to compel formal review.
Diane had tried to prevent that review.
Still, central content remained sealed.
Court authorized opening soon, but Emma requested delay until chain-of-custody audit completed.
She refused to let Diane later claim tampering.
Then auditors found a problem.
Envelope wax contained microscopic gold dust formulation used by Bennett legal office until 1999.
Harrison supposedly prepared envelope around 2017.
Why use obsolete seal?
Nathan explained Charles kept old wax.
Possible.
But signature beneath exterior flap—visible under imaging—was not Harrison’s.
It was Evelyn’s.
Had everyone assumed wrong sender?
Nathan’s instructions said “Harrison Instrument.”
That did not necessarily mean Harrison authored envelope.
Rose looked equally surprised.
Evelyn might have prepared it.
Then who wrote trigger condition?
Archived draft showed Harrison and Evelyn jointly negotiated it before her death.
So sealed envelope might contain Evelyn’s version of final agreement.
Where was Harrison’s?
Nathan searched father’s inventory.
Two envelopes originally existed.
H-1.
E-1.
Nathan delivered E-1.
H-1 was missing.
Diane smiled for first time since arrest.
“You see? You don’t even have final document.”
Michael stared.
“Where is H-1?”
Diane leaned back.
“I don’t know.”
But her expression said otherwise.
That night, Thomas Reed reviewed hotel footage again.
Minutes before Diane confronted Emma upstairs, she entered private concierge safe.
She removed a cream envelope.
Same size.
Same gold-flecked wax.
Then placed it beneath lining of her burgundy handbag.
Diane had brought Harrison’s envelope to hotel.
