Chapter 1 - The Fall

Emma Bennett knew something was wrong the moment Diane stopped pretending to smile.

The luxury hotel atrium glittered beneath them, two stories of marble, crystal chandeliers and formally dressed guests. Emma stood on the second-floor balcony with ten-month-old Lily pressed protectively against her chest.

Diane stepped closer.

“That child will never be one of us.”

Emma tightened her arms.

“What are you talking about?”

Diane suddenly seized Emma’s wrist.

Before Emma could react, her mother-in-law ripped Lily from her embrace.

“Diane!”

Emma lunged forward.

Diane turned toward the railing.

What happened next seemed impossible even while Emma watched it.

Diane thrust Lily beyond the balcony.

And released her.

Emma screamed.

Downstairs, Michael looked up.

His face transformed.

He sprinted beneath Lily’s trajectory and threw out both arms.

The impact drove him onto his knees, but Lily landed against his chest.

Safe.

Crying.

Alive.

“I’ve got you,” Michael whispered, trembling. “You’re safe.”

Hotel security rushed toward both floors.

Emma shoved past Diane, but guards intercepted the older woman before she could move again.

Diane showed no remorse.

Instead, she stared down at Michael.

“She isn’t a Bennett.”

Emma went still.

Then she reached into her champagne-colored clutch.

She had carried the envelope for three days without opening it.

A courier had delivered it with one instruction:

If Diane ever denies Lily belongs to the Bennett family, show her this.

Emma pulled it out.

Diane saw the cream paper and dark wax seal.

Her confidence vanished.

“Where did you get that?”

Emma stared at her.

“Then why are you afraid of this?”

Diane lunged.

Security caught her.

The envelope bent in Emma’s hand.

A tiny corner of the document slipped through the opening.

No words were visible.

Only a gold crest.

Downstairs, Michael noticed it.

Then he looked at the heavy gold signet ring on his right hand.

Same crest.

Exactly.

Diane saw recognition in her son’s face.

For the first time that night, she looked terrified.

“MICHAEL—DON’T OPEN IT!”

The atrium went silent.

Michael carried Lily upstairs and stopped in front of his mother.

“Why?”

Diane’s eyes remained fixed on the envelope.

“If you open that, you’ll destroy this family.”

Michael reached for it.

But before Emma could hand it over, hotel security chief Thomas Reed stepped between them.

“Mr. Bennett.”

He held up his phone.

“There’s something you need to see first.”

Security footage showed the courier who had delivered Emma’s envelope three days earlier.

Michael recognized him immediately.

The man had been dead for six years.
