Chapter 8 - Rosemont
Rosemont Hotel fire was deliberately set.
Police investigation had remained inconclusive publicly.
Victor knew more.
A subcontractor named Paul Danner had set fire during dispute over unpaid invoices.
He later confessed privately through attorney and accepted unrelated insurance-fraud plea as part of broader settlement.
Why conceal exact truth?
Because Bellmont’s insurer threatened deny coverage if internal billing dispute showed negligence.
Victor agreed to confidential settlement to preserve recovery.
Was that proper?
Debatable.
But no hidden murder.
Rosemont remained closed eleven months.
Bellmont suddenly had $12 million liquidity gap.
Payroll, employee housing and pension obligations collided.
CFO Leonard Cole proposed temporary use of pension reserve.
Victor refused.
Then fire-recovery credit collapsed.
Leonard moved money anyway.
That was origin.
Michael discovered.
Instead of reporting Leonard immediately, he tried return money before anyone noticed.
That transformed unauthorized bridge into cover-up.
When Sarah found transfers as teenage intern, Victor honestly thought they were authorized temporary escrow because Michael and Leonard told him so.
He dismissed her.
Then later found truth.
Why not tell Sarah?
By then Michael had persuaded Elise and Sarah that Victor authorized everything.
Victor feared any denial would sound like desperate blame.
And he lacked proof.
So he withdrew.
Bad choice.
Then Ethan asked:
“Why were you in Bellmont lobby today?”
Victor explained.
Bellmont new owners had invited former workers for “Founders’ Relief Day,” distributing replica silver coins as fundraiser for retired staff.
Victor came anonymously.
He was not officially welcome.
Some workers still blamed him.
He crouched because an elderly former bellman dropped coins.
Lily saw open palm and assumed need.
Her kindness triggered encounter.
Elise knew event.
That was why matchbook listed time.
Then old coin itself:
Original 1976 dollar belonged to Sarah’s grandmother Ruth.
Ruth gave Victor when he proposed to Elise:
“Don’t build anything you’d be ashamed for your child to inherit.”
In 2009, after Sarah confronted him, Victor gave coin to her as apology for not believing.
Why engrave 2009?
To mark date he promised listen next time.
Then Sarah cut him out anyway.
So when Victor saw coin in Lily’s hand, he realized Sarah had kept it despite claiming she wanted nothing from him.
That destroyed his anger instantly.
Then second coin Michael created copied engraving to encode archive.
Why?
Because he felt guilty and wanted truth recoverable after death.
Complicated, cowardly.
Then Sarah asked Victor:
“Did you ever try contact me?”
“Yes.”
Letters returned.
Emails blocked.
Through whom?
Michael.
Victor had sent letters to Michael’s office because Sarah changed address.
Michael never forwarded.
Sarah stared.
“How many?”
“Thirty-two.”
Elise closed eyes.
Victor carried copies.
Sarah read first:
Sarah, you were right that money moved. You were wrong only about who ordered it. I was wrong not to believe you.
Dated 2012.
Thirteen years of estrangement could have changed with one forwarded letter.
Then last unopened archive folder bore title:
FOR ETHAN CARTER IF HE EVER BECOMES FAMILY.
