Chapter 7 - Ethan’s Name in Michael’s File
Ethan joined Meridian Hospitality in 2011.
Junior analyst.
Bellmont was distressed acquisition target.
His team reviewed financial disclosures.
He remembered.
He did not remember Michael Grant.
Yet Michael’s ledger contained:
E. CARTER requested pension reconstruction file through Leonard Cole.
Ethan denied.
Archive access logs were checked.
Credential:
EC-1147.
Assigned to:
Eleanor Carter.
Not Ethan.
A woman.
Then handwritten shorthand “E. Carter” had later been interpreted as Ethan by Elise.
Who was Eleanor?
Former outside pension auditor.
No relation.
Dead five years.
So Ethan was not secretly involved.
Important misdirection collapsed.
But another note did mention him fully:
ETHAN CARTER — AGGRESSIVE YOUNG ACQUISITIONS COUNSEL. VICTOR HATES HIM.
Ethan grimaced.
“Counsel?”
He wasn’t lawyer.
Michael’s shorthand inaccurate.
How did Michael know Victor hated him?
Because after 2012 conference confrontation Victor complained publicly about “that arrogant Carter kid.”
Then Sarah realized something.
Michael knew Ethan’s name before she met him.
When Sarah introduced Ethan in 2015, Michael never reacted.
He had recognized man Victor despised.
And still encouraged relationship.
Why?
Maybe coincidence.
Maybe manipulation.
Sarah remembered Michael saying:
“He sounds stable. You deserve someone far away from hotel politics.”
Was he trying to keep Sarah from reconciling with Victor by pairing her with Victor’s adversary?
No evidence.
Could simply be silence.
Then Ethan asked Victor:
“Why did you hate me?”
Victor answered:
“Because you came into my hotel with spreadsheet and told me sell properties while people were losing pensions.”
“I didn’t know full story.”
“You didn’t ask.”
Ethan accepted resemblance to his earlier behavior in lobby.
Quick judgment.
Then Sarah asked:
“Why hit him today?”
Victor looked ashamed.
“Because he spoke to Lily like she was doing something shameful by showing kindness.”
Ethan corrected:
“I thought she was beside stranger.”
“You thought poor-looking man.”
That landed.
Victor admitted strike still wrong.
“I should not have hit you.”
Ethan looked at wrecked champagne table.
“No. You shouldn’t.”
No instant masculine forgiveness.
Then archive yielded final Michael memo:
If Sarah ever marries Ethan Carter, do not tell her why I kept Victor away until after Elise knows what happened at Rosemont.
Rosemont?
Sarah had never heard.
Victor’s expression changed.
Elise’s did too.
Ethan noticed.
“What is Rosemont?”
Victor answered:
“A hotel we lost before Bellmont scandal.”
Elise said:
“That’s not all.”
Rosemont Hotel had burned in 2009.
No deaths.
But one employee was injured.
And the first unauthorized pension transfer occurred forty-eight hours later.
Maybe scandal started as emergency response.
Then Michael’s note:
Sarah believes Rosemont was an accident.
Do not correct her without Victor present.
Sarah stared at father.
“You told me electrical fire.”
