Chapter 9 - Evelyn’s Night Drive
Claire finally told full story.
Eight years earlier, Evelyn called at 1:24 a.m.
She sounded frightened.
Asked Claire to come to side entrance of Bennett mansion.
Claire drove from Haven House.
Evelyn was waiting with blonde girl around six.
No suitcase.
Only yellow backpack.
Evelyn said:
“Take her to your mother. Just for tonight.”
Claire asked who she was.
Evelyn answered:
“Someone Richard cannot know about yet.”
That phrase had haunted Claire.
She drove girl to Haven House.
Margaret was busy.
Claire placed girl in Room Eleven with Nora.
At dawn Evelyn returned personally and collected her.
No form.
No name.
No database.
“Why did you agree?”
“Because Evelyn was practically family.”
“Why hide for eight years?”
“Your mother made me promise.”
“And when Anna investigated?”
“I lied.”
“Why?”
“Because Evelyn was alive and begged me.”
Claire had protected Evelyn’s secret.
Then after Evelyn died, she continued because admitting meant confessing unauthorized child placement.
Emily’s binder threatened that.
Richard stared at Claire during recorded legal meeting.
“Evelyn told you I couldn’t know?”
“Yes.”
He looked broken.
Ethan did not jump to affair-child conclusion.
He had learned.
“What did girl look like?”
Claire described:
blonde hair,
green sweater,
small crescent birthmark near left wrist.
No one recognized.
Then Ethan found Evelyn’s calendar.
Night in question:
12:30 — E.M.
Private.
Initials.
E.M.
Not enough.
Bank records showed Evelyn withdrew $4,000 cash next day.
No clue.
Then Anna’s archive contained photograph.
Taken at Haven House charity picnic three months later.
Background:
Evelyn talking to woman.
Beside woman stood blonde girl.
Same crescent mark visible.
Anna had circled child years later.
Caption:
MAYA MORROW?
Name.
Maya Morrow.
Public records found.
Now fourteen.
Alive.
Living in Pennsylvania with mother, Rebecca Morrow.
No disappearance.
No secret death.
Ethan felt relief.
Through proper channels, Rebecca agreed to speak.
“Yes. Maya stayed at Haven House one night.”
“Why?”
Rebecca sighed.
“Because I was terrified.”
“Of Richard?”
“No.”
“Of whom?”
“Evelyn.”
That made no sense.
Rebecca corrected:
“Not terrified of her. Terrified for her.”
Evelyn had discovered something involving Bennett Foundation.
Rebecca worked in foundation accounting.
She planned report.
Someone had searched her apartment.
She believed work-related.
Evelyn moved Rebecca temporarily to hotel.
Maya needed safe place for one night.
Why hide from Richard?
Because Evelyn believed leak came from Richard’s office.
Not necessarily Richard himself.
That was why Maya became undocumented second child.
And why Evelyn told Claire Richard could not know yet.
