Chapter 5 - Martin Dale
Martin did not flee.
Police found him at urgent-care clinic.
His left hand had been cut deeply.
He claimed he sliced it on broken wine glass while checking reception setup.
Why leave without reporting?
He panicked because blood could be mistaken for evidence after Lily disappeared.
Poor decision.
Then investigators checked rope.
No blood.
His cut likely unrelated.
Did he tie Lily?
“No.”
Did he enter her bedroom?
“No.”
Security badge logs showed Martin on lower level during likely abduction window.
Could logs be falsified?
Possibly.
Camera footage showed him there twice.
Not enough for full exclusion.
Then Andrew asked:
“Did my father ever ask you to remove Adrian Vale from this house?”
Martin went silent.
Attorney requested.
Later he admitted.
Nathaniel ordered him drive Adrian and his mother to airport after confrontation.
No violence.
No police.
Nathaniel had paid them $250,000 relocation settlement.
Adrian's mother signed non-disclosure.
Why?
Because Nathaniel accused Adrian of stealing a sealed file.
Martin said:
“Adrian didn’t steal it.”
Andrew stared.
“You knew?”
“Yes.”
“Who did?”
Martin looked at Eleanor.
She became pale.
“Don't.”
Andrew turned.
“Mom?”
Eleanor sat.
Then admitted.
She took file.
Why?
It contained evidence Nathaniel had been making illegal payments through Ashford charitable foundation?
No, could become corporate. Fine.
The file concerned one property:
Waverly Children's Recovery Home.
Nathaniel funded it.
Adrian’s mother, Helen Vale, worked there as administrator.
Eleanor discovered Nathaniel planned sell property despite donor restriction requiring child-recovery use.
She copied documents.
Why frame Adrian?
She didn’t.
Nathaniel discovered file missing.
Adrian had been caught searching office same night for something unrelated.
Nathaniel assumed.
Eleanor stayed silent.
“Why?”
“I was afraid.”
“Your silence destroyed him.”
“Yes.”
Did Nathaniel ever learn?
Years later.
But too late.
Did he apologize?
Privately.
He offered Adrian’s mother more money.
She refused.
Then what did Adrian want now?
“What Nathaniel took from my mother.”
Possibly Waverly documents.
But child binding still unexplained.
Then Martin revealed another fact.
Nathaniel had hidden original Waverly deed inside portrait compartment.
Andrew froze.
“Where?”
“Behind the second panel.”
They already looked.
Empty.
Someone had removed it.
Maybe Adrian.
Maybe whoever tied Lily.
Why would Lily be involved?
She might have seen theft.
Then Anna remembered Lily’s first words:
“She wasn’t hiding me. She was hiding me from him.”
Who did Lily mean by “him”?
They assumed approaching man in Andrew-like clothes.
But when child was asked with pictures—
she pointed to Martin.
Anna stared.
“She meant you?”
Martin went white.
Lily nodded.
Eleanor looked shocked.
“I thought she meant Adrian.”
Martin denied.
Then Lily pointed at his hands.
One hand bandaged.
She began crying.
Who tied wrists?
She pointed.
Martin.
Everyone went silent.
Martin whispered:
“No.”
May you like
But Lily kept pointing.
And for the first time, his calm broke.
