Chapter 4 - The Portrait Compartment

The portrait was older than Adrian.

The engraving wasn’t.

A.V. had been scratched into frame from inside.

Someone once sat in that compartment and carved initials while hidden.

Andrew asked Eleanor:

“Did Adrian know this room existed?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“He and you found it when you were children.”

Andrew stared.

“I don't remember.”

“You were seven.”

The compartment had originally been a document niche.

Large enough for one adult to crouch, or two children to hide.

Andrew and Adrian used it during games.

Then Nathaniel discovered.

He was furious.

He sealed inner latch.

Why?

Because inside niche was another door.

Not visible now.

Behind back panel.

Eleanor had forgotten.

Andrew grabbed flashlight.

Anna stayed with Lily.

They searched.

A narrow seam.

Andrew pushed.

A second panel opened.

Behind it:

small vertical shelf.

Empty except one faded photograph.

Two boys.

Andrew and Adrian.

Both around seven.

Standing beside Nathaniel.

On back:

MY TWO SONS.

Andrew stared.

“He called him that.”

“Yes.”

“Then why erase him?”

Eleanor looked away.

“Because what happened later was worse than theft.”

Before she could explain, security arrived.

Andrew had quietly triggered house alert.

The mansion was searched.

No Adrian.

No unknown man.

No forced entry.

Then rope around Lily’s wrists was examined.

Ordinary utility rope from mansion garden shed.

No fingerprints useful.

Who had access?

Staff.

Family.

Contractors.

Nearly anyone.

Then Lisa—no, wrong story. Keep Lily.

Lily was given child-safe picture board.

Could she identify who tied her?

She pointed to a black square.

Black clothing?

Anna showed choices.

Man.

Woman.

She pointed:

MAN.

Andrew?

No.

Adrian photograph?

She hesitated.

Then shook head.

Another man.

So neither Andrew nor Adrian tied her.

Eleanor whispered:

“Then someone else was here.”

Andrew asked Lily where.

She pointed upward.

Second floor.

Then made sleeping gesture.

“Bedroom?”

Nod.

Someone entered Lily’s bedroom?

She nodded.

Then bound wrists.

Then carried her?

She pointed at hallway.

Portrait.

So an unknown man took her from bedroom and put her in compartment.

Why?

Could be kidnapping interrupted.

Could be hiding her.

Then Lily pointed to gold portrait again.

She tapped frame.

Then pointed to floor.

Anna crouched.

Under console table was a small object.

A broken button.

Dark burgundy.

With embossed crest:

Ashford House Security.

Uniform button.

Andrew looked up.

The person who tied Lily may have been wearing security uniform.

Who was on duty?

Head of security:

Martin Dale.

Three guards.

Martin was missing.

Phone off.

His locker contained nothing.

But parking record showed his SUV left mansion twenty minutes before Lily was found.

Andrew’s anger sharpened.

“Find him.”

Eleanor said:

“Andrew.”

“What?”

“Martin worked for your father.”

“So?”

“For twenty-four years.”

“Meaning?”

May you like

“He was the man Nathaniel used when he wanted problems handled quietly.”

And Adrian’s disappearance nineteen years ago had begun on Martin Dale’s first year as head of security.
