Chapter 8 - The Company That Paid Him Twice

The LLC was called JV Strategic Advisory.

Julian formed it four years earlier.

Before we married.

Nothing inherently wrong.

Employees at his level were required to disclose outside businesses that might conflict.

He had not.

The trucking vendor, Archer Transport, paid JV Strategic $4,000 to $7,000 monthly for “market consulting.”

At the same time, Julian approved increased Apex business with Archer.

Conflict.

Was it bribery?

Potentially.

But we needed evidence of quid pro quo.

Archer’s owner, Caleb Ross, retained counsel.

He said Julian genuinely provided consulting on routes unrelated to Apex.

Could be legitimate services.

Why pay secretly?

Because Julian told him Apex allowed side work.

False.

Why did Archer receive higher-priced contracts?

Caleb claimed service quality.

Procurement records showed performance was decent.

Not sham vendor.

But bidding process had exceptions Julian authorized.

Outside investigator took over.

Again, not every suspicious connection equal.

Then email:

Caleb:

Can we get Midwest extension?

Julian:

I can make it happen.

Caleb:

Consulting bonus if it does.

Julian:

Careful.

That looked worse.

Next month, Julian’s LLC received extra $15,000.

Then extension approved.

Strong evidence of improper conflict/kickback.

Apex placed Julian on unpaid suspension after committee findings reached threshold under policy.

Still not termination until process completed.

He filed internal complaint alleging marital retaliation.

Independent ethics officer reviewed.

Because I had fully recused, his claim weakened but remained investigated.

Then something unexpected.

Ethics officer found I had once intervened indirectly in Julian’s career.

Five years earlier, before marriage, I told HR executive:

“He’s good. Don’t punish him for being aggressive.”

That comment appeared in old notes.

Had I influenced promotion?

Not directly perhaps.

But I had expressed favorable view.

Julian’s attorney used it.

“You secretly helped him when convenient and now pretend total recusal.”

Fair criticism.

I disclosed.

The board commissioned outside counsel to assess my own governance conduct.

That stung.

But necessary.

Finding:

my comment created appearance concern but no evidence I directed promotion.

Processes still independent.

Recommendation:

formal related-person employment policy.

We adopted.

Accountability both directions.

Then Julian called.

“You see? You were manipulating my career.”

“I said you were good.”

“You knew who I was.”

“Yes.”

“I didn't know who you were.”

“Yes.”

“That’s power.”

“Yes.”

I stopped fighting word.

It was.

“I should have disclosed conflict earlier.”

His anger faltered.

“You admit it?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because I liked being loved without surname.”

“Was I?”

“What?”

“Did I love you?”

I closed eyes.

“I think you did.”

He went quiet.

“Then why are you doing this?”

“Because love does not cancel what you did.”

Silence.

Then:

“I hate you.”

“I know.”

He hung up.

That night I cried for first time since accident.

Not over money.

Not career.

Because marriage contained real tenderness too.

Julian brought me soup when I had pneumonia.

Slept on bathroom floor during food poisoning.

Held my father’s hand during rehab without knowing Nathan could affect his career.

He was not fake every second.

That made betrayal harder.

Then Rebecca reminded me:

“People can love and still become unsafe partners.”

Yes.

Meanwhile, Evelyn recovered.

Harold’s daughter Melissa obtained temporary restraint over disputed beneficiary funds pending capacity review.

Arthur? There is no Arthur in story. Fine.

Evelyn insisted Harold knowingly changed everything to her.

Possible.

Evidence later showed Harold had discussed increasing Evelyn’s share but not eliminating Melissa entirely.

The exact 100% change remained suspicious.

Forensic signature analysis could not conclusively prove electronic act.

Then nurse remembered Harold telling her:

“Evelyn keeps saying Melissa doesn’t need money.”

That supported pressure, not necessarily forgery.

Civil litigation.

No murder twist.

Good.

Then Evelyn contacted Julian and said:

“We have bigger problem.”

Investigators recovered message.

Julian:

What?

Evelyn:

Claire’s father is coming.

My father?

Nathan Bennett had been living quietly in Arizona since stroke recovery.

Why would Evelyn fear him?

Then next text:

He knows about the old Apex acquisition.

Which acquisition?

Seven years earlier.

Before my marriage.

Before Julian’s promotion.

May you like

Before almost everything.

And somehow Evelyn knew something about it.
