The Chairwoman in Room 417 / Chapter 4 / 15

Chapter 4 - The Chairwoman He Googled

The public records did not make my role obvious.

Apex Logistics Holdings had a layered structure.

Bennett Family Trust held voting shares through Bennett Strategic Partners.

I was chair of BSP and board chair of Apex Holdings.

The operating company used a separate leadership structure.

Julian worked three levels below holding board.

If he searched casually, he might see my maiden name without connecting it to Claire Vance.

But he searched more than casually.

Jonathan pulled browsing history lawfully from corporate device under audit authority.

Searches included:

Claire Bennett Apex Holdings.

Claire Bennett married.

Bennett Vance logistics.

Apex chairwoman age.

That narrowed ambiguity.

He suspected.

Then he clicked a business-journal profile from six years earlier containing my photograph.

So yes.

He knew.

At least six weeks before accident.

I stared at timestamp.

My husband learned I chaired company where he worked.

And said nothing.

Instead, around same time, he requested prenup copy.

That was not proof of plot.

But sequence mattered.

Why conceal discovery?

Rebecca advised we wait.

Meanwhile, hospital admitted me overnight because swelling required observation.

At 1:30 a.m., joint-account alert appeared.

Transfer initiated:

$400,000.

Destination:

account ending 8842.

Authorized by:

Julian Vance.

I almost expected it.

“Rebecca.”

She looked.

“Call bank fraud unit?”

“Yes. Tell truth: marital dispute, unusually large transfer, source predominantly traceable to my separate distributions, and I contest withdrawal.”

We did not call it theft automatically.

Joint account rights can be complicated.

Bank placed temporary review hold due size and dispute.

Julian called thirty seconds later.

“You froze my money?”

“Bank is reviewing a disputed transfer.”

“It’s our account!”

“Then why are you trying to move a third of it at one-thirty in morning?”

“Because you threatened divorce.”

“I filed nothing yet.”

“You will.”

“So your response is to empty account first?”

“I’m protecting myself.”

“From me?”

“Yes.”

There it was.

Then:

“You think I don’t know who you are.”

Silence.

He knew.

I leaned back.

“Say it.”

His voice changed.

“You think being Nathan Bennett’s daughter makes you untouchable?”

Not chairwoman.

Daughter.

Interesting.

“You searched me.”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Doesn’t matter.”

“It does to me.”

“Six weeks.”

“Why didn’t you say anything?”

“Because I wanted to see how long you’d keep lying.”

There was genuine hurt inside accusation.

Fair.

I had concealed major identity fact.

“I should have told you,” I said.

He went silent.

“But discovering it did not authorize you to move money.”

“You made me look like idiot.”

“I allowed you to believe I was financially dependent.”

“That’s lying.”

“Yes.”

Again truth.

“I wanted to know whether you loved me without title.”

“And did you enjoy watching Mom call you useless?”

“No.”

“You could've stopped it.”

“Yes.”

That hurt to admit.

Silence.

Then Julian said:

“You've been testing me for three years.”

“No. I stopped thinking of it as test long ago. It became avoidance.”

“At least admit you manipulated me.”

“I withheld truth. I’ll own that.”

He breathed hard.

Then:

“Good. Because I have recordings.”

My stomach tightened.

“Of what?”

“You.”

“For what?”

“Everything.”

He hung up.

Rebecca looked at me.

“That’s new.”

Yes.

Then Jonathan called.

Audit team found an encrypted folder on Julian’s company computer.

Label:

Bennett Contingency.

Inside were dozens of screenshots, recordings, legal notes, and draft complaints.

And one document titled:

HOSTILE CONTROL / RETALIATION STRATEGY.

Julian had not merely discovered my identity.

He had been building a case that if his job was ever threatened after marital conflict, I was abusing corporate authority.

May you like

Which meant the audit I authorized tonight could look exactly like retaliation.

My own power had just become evidence he intended to use against me.
