Chapter 7 - Ethan’s First Lie
Ethan confessed before investigators searched devices.
He had used Eleanor’s laptop.
One month earlier.
Emma looked devastated.
“Why?”
His father Thomas left encrypted estate note referencing Mercer House.
Ethan had found it while closing old foundation archive.
The note:
IF 14 EVER CONTACTS FAMILY, GIVE HIM RED LEDGER. DO NOT LET ELEANOR STOP YOU.
Ethan didn't understand.
He used Eleanor’s laptop because his own foundation account would log search to board.
He wanted investigate privately.
He downloaded Resident14 file through Natalie’s cached credentials? That implies credential misuse. He admitted.
He found Michael Grant.
But did not contact.
“Did you send him Noah’s picture?”
“No.”
“Packages?”
“No.”
“Brass tag?”
“No.”
Technical analysis supported he downloaded records but no package files found.
Then why Thomas wrote warning?
Because Thomas knew Eleanor still carried guilt and might resist reopening.
Red ledger documented incident contemporaneously.
Thomas wanted Michael receive it if he ever sought records.
David Cole had custody by 2007 because he was witness and requested safekeeping during foundation archive relocation.
After David’s death, location unknown.
Ethan’s secrecy began there.
He believed finding ledger would resolve threat without hurting Emma.
Then he discovered chain.
He suspected Eleanor reenacting incident.
He should have immediately told Emma.
Instead he staged photograph with Noah wearing loose chain.

He realized tag fake.
He told Noah:
“Don't tell Grandma yet.”

She assumed Ethan had discovered her hidden tag.
She took control and escalated into bowl humiliation.
Thus Ethan “put chain on first” literally true, but not as punishment.
Still unacceptable judgment.
He accepted that.
Emma said:
“You used our son as evidence.”
“Yes.”
“And then my mother used him as a target.”
Eleanor cried.

Eleanor claimed asleep.

Ethan and Emma had stayed overnight after family dinner.
Could be either.

He denied.
