Chapter 10 - The Girl After Fourteen

Resident 15 entered Mercer House two weeks after Michael left.

Five-year-old girl.

Name sealed.

Initials:

E.M.

Emma was five in 1995.

Her legal birth certificate listed Eleanor and David Cole as parents.

Could still adoption amended certificate.

Eleanor said coincidence.

Then archived placement order unsealed with Emma’s consent.

Emma Cole had been adopted at age five by David and Eleanor Cole.

She had never been told.

Room went silent.

Emma stared at woman she had called Mom for thirty-one years.

“No.”

Eleanor cried.

“We were going to tell you.”

“When?”

“When you were older.”

“I’m thirty-six.”

Eleanor had no answer.

Emma’s memories before five were fragmented.

She believed early childhood photos lost in house flood.

Some were.

But story constructed.

David and Eleanor adopted her after biological mother relinquished parental rights during severe financial/mental crisis? Health sensitive. Avoid diagnosis. Say unable to provide safe care, voluntarily consented to adoption after prolonged legal process.

Who was biological mother?

Sealed.

Emma demanded.

Eleanor refused initially.

Maya explained Emma as adult could petition/access depending jurisdiction.

But David’s red ledger had handwritten clue:

RESIDENT 15 — EMMA M.

PLACEMENT WITH COLES APPROVED.

BIOLOGICAL MOTHER REQUESTS NO BENNETT CONTACT.

Bennett contact?

Why?

Emma turned Ethan.

“You knew.”

His face answered.

“How long?”

“Six days.”

He had found partial adoption record while investigating Mercer House.

That was why he told Noah not to tell.

Noah had overheard Ethan confronting Eleanor in basement.

Ethan had said:

“You’re not really Emma’s biological mother, and she deserves to know.”

Noah later asked.

Ethan foolishly told him:

“Grandma is still Grandma. Don't tell Mommy yet. I need proof.”

So Noah’s unfinished sentence was likely:

“Grandma isn’t really Mommy’s mother.”

Not that Eleanor was impersonator.

Not that Noah’s grandmother relationship emotionally meaningless.

Eleanor was Emma’s legal adoptive mother.

But biological truth had been concealed.

Ethan wanted confirm before telling Emma.

Again he chose secrecy.

Noah carried adult secret.

Eleanor feared he would reveal.

That partly explained why she had become controlling with Noah before kitchen incident.

But it did not excuse abuse.

Emma’s eyes filled.

“You put a chain around my son while hiding that my entire childhood was a lie.”

Ethan shook head.

“Your childhood wasn't a lie.”

“Don't decide what it was.”

He fell silent.

Then Emma turned Eleanor.

“Who was my mother?”

Eleanor whispered:

“I promised her.”

“She gave up legal rights thirty-one years ago. I’m asking about my own life.”

Eleanor looked at Michael Grant.

Michael had gone still.

Emma noticed.

“You know.”

Michael shook head.

“Not all of it.”

“What do you know?”

He stared at her.

“You were at Mercer House when I was.”

“Did you know me?”

“You followed me everywhere.”

Emma’s breathing caught.

Michael continued.

“You called me Mikey.”

Emma suddenly remembered something.

A red door.

A boy giving her half a cookie.

A woman crying in office.

And Eleanor kneeling in front of her saying:

“You can come home with us tonight.”

Emma gripped table.

Michael whispered:

“You weren't Resident Fifteen.”

Everyone looked at ledger.

“Then who was I?”

Michael answered:

“You didn't have a resident number.”

May you like

“Why?”

“Because your mother worked there.”
