Chapter 8 - Nathan’s Father

Eleanor had an affair.
Once.
During a separation.
Nathan's biological father was Dr. Samuel Ellis.
Rebecca's older brother.
That was how Rebecca became involved.
Charles knew.
He agreed to raise Nathan initially.
Then Nathan was born with medical needs.
Charles's resentment deepened.
He persuaded Eleanor to place Nathan with Rebecca.
Later he created the trust out of guilt.
But the Mercer family trust had bloodline provisions.
Nathan was not biologically Mercer through Charles.
Was he still legally entitled?
Potentially, because Charles had acknowledged him as his son at birth.
Lawyers would decide.
Charles feared that question.
So he buried the account inside Haven Bridge.
Grant looked at Nathan.
“You're still my brother.”
Nathan smiled faintly.
“Half.”
“Still.”
Nathan's biological father Samuel Ellis died years earlier.
No new hidden parent waiting behind a door.
Rebecca had told Nathan the truth in adolescence.
Nathan had always known.
What he did not know was Charles knew too.
That hurt.
Charles hadn't surrendered a child he believed was his.
He surrendered a child he resented for not being his.
Eleanor finally faced Nathan.
“I should have stopped him.”
“Yes.”
“I was sick.”
“I know.”
“I loved you.”
Nathan's voice remained quiet.
“I believe you.”
Eleanor looked surprised.
Nathan continued:
“That doesn't make what happened okay.”
Eleanor nodded.
There would be no instant reconciliation.
Then forensic accountants found something unexpected.
Nathan's $2.8 million had grown.
Because Haven Bridge invested the consolidated assets.
His proportional claim could exceed $7 million.
Nathan laughed when told.
“I spent twenty years angry about money I didn't know existed.”
“What will you do?” Grant asked.
“Pay my mortgage.”
Grant smiled.
“And the other $6.8 million?”
Nathan shrugged.
“Figure out who else got robbed.”
That became the mission.
Fourteen trusts.
Nine living beneficiaries.
Three estates.
Two unresolved.
Grant used his Mercer Financial resources to fund an independent restitution review.
No nondisclosure agreements.
No quiet settlements conditioned on silence.
Vivienne's evidence helped.
Tessa's records helped.
Caroline's files helped.
Then Tessa approached Grant privately.
“There is one trust you haven't seen.”
Grant sighed.
“Of course.”
“This one isn't dormant.”
“Whose?”
Tessa looked toward Noah.
“His.”
Grant froze.
Noah had a trust.
Grant created one after his birth.
But Tessa wasn't talking about that.
A separate account existed.
Created before Noah was conceived.
Beneficiary:
UNBORN MALE DESCENDANT OF GRANT MERCER.
Funding:
$15 million.
Creator:
Charles Mercer.
Grant's dead father had established a fortune for a grandson who did not yet exist.
Why specifically male?
May you like
Why Grant's descendant?
And why had Caroline hidden that too?
