Chapter 2 - Three Women in One Photograph

Grant confronted nobody.

Not yet.

Forensics copied the memory card.

Vivienne was questioned separately.

Tessa remained at the hospital.

Grant stayed with Noah.

The photograph bothered him more each time he looked at it.

Caroline stood in the center.

Tessa beside her.

Vivienne on the other side.

All three smiling.

Location metadata pointed to a charity gala in Connecticut.

Four years ago.

Grant had attended that gala.

He remembered Caroline disappearing for twenty minutes.

When she returned, she seemed upset.

She said nothing.

At the time, Grant didn't ask.

Marriage had been difficult then.

He had been traveling constantly.

Caroline had stopped telling him things because, as she once said:

“You only listen when something becomes an emergency.”

He hated how accurate that sounded now.

Tessa returned from the hospital the next morning.

Grant placed the photograph in front of her.

“Tell me.”

Tessa went pale.

“You found it.”

“You knew it existed?”

“No.”

“Then what did you know?”

Tessa looked toward Noah's room.

“Caroline hired me.”

Grant froze.

Tessa had supposedly answered a childcare advertisement six months after Noah was born.

That was false.

Caroline hired Tessa before Noah existed.

For what?

Not childcare.

Investigation.

Tessa had previously worked as an administrative investigator for a private family-services nonprofit called Haven Bridge.

Caroline believed someone was manipulating her medical records.

“What records?”

“Fertility records.”

Grant stared.

Noah had been conceived through IVF.

Caroline had struggled for years.

Then suddenly, after one final treatment, she became pregnant.

Grant had considered it their miracle.

Tessa said:

“Caroline stopped believing it was a miracle.”

Why?

Because the clinic could not produce a complete chain-of-custody file for the transferred embryo.

Grant's chest tightened.

“Are you saying Noah isn't mine?”

“I don't know.”

“Caroline?”

“I don't know.”

Tessa refused to speculate beyond evidence.

Good.

Then Grant asked about Vivienne.

Tessa looked ashamed.

“Vivienne worked at Haven Bridge.”

Grant stared.

“What?”

“She was our donor-relations director.”

Vivienne had told Grant she worked in luxury event management.

She had.

Later.

But before that, she worked with Tessa.

And Caroline.

Why hide it?

Tessa answered:

“Because Haven Bridge was connected to the clinic.”

The nonprofit helped families finance fertility treatments.

It also maintained confidential donor records.

Caroline believed money was moving between Haven Bridge and her clinic.

She began investigating.

Then she died.

Grant stiffened.

Caroline died in a car accident fourteen months earlier.

Police found no evidence of foul play.

Tessa immediately clarified:

“I'm not saying Vivienne killed her.”

“Then what are you saying?”

“That Caroline discovered something before she died.”

The memory card contained eleven damaged files.

Only two had been recovered.

The second opened.

A video.

Caroline appeared alone.

She looked directly into the camera.

“Grant, if you're watching this, then I failed to tell you while I still had the courage.”

Grant stopped breathing.

Caroline continued:

“Before you question Noah…”

She hesitated.

May you like

“…question yourself.”

The video ended.
