The Camera Chloe Never Found / Chapter 8 / 15

Chapter 8 - Why Maya Was Hired

It was not sinister.

But it was a secret I had forgotten.

Six months before I left for Saudi Arabia, Mom’s social worker recommended a vetted home-support agency.

My company’s executive-assistance office handled background checks for household staff because of security.

Maya applied through agency.

Her name entered private payroll/vendor system during candidate screening.

I approved shortlist electronically.

Never interviewed.

So technically her name was in my records before hire.

Chloe saw.

Why did Chloe frame as secret?

To sow distrust.

Maybe prison letter manipulative.

But there was more.

Candidate evaluation marked Maya:

“Previous complaint against employer regarding elder neglect.”

She had reported another family two years earlier.

That was why agency initially hesitated?

No, report was verified and she was protected whistleblower.

I had selected her partly because evaluator wrote:

“Demonstrates willingness to report unsafe conditions.”

I had clicked approve.

Forgot.

So in a strange way, I had hired exactly person needed.

Maya read.

“You chose me?”

“I approved agency’s recommendation.”

“Because I reported another case?”

“Apparently.”

She laughed.

“So past me got job from future you.”

“Something.”

Then:

“Did Chloe know?”

She likely accessed household HR file after I left.

That explains why she distrusted Maya from beginning.

She saw whistleblower note.

Then her hostility was not random.

She knew Maya might report.

Chloe later admitted in letter:

I knew she was dangerous to me before she knew I was dangerous to Margaret.

That was chilling.

Then why keep Maya at all?

Carter insisted extra help. Chloe tried fire but Mom bonded, and agency contract/reporting could raise questions. She reduced access.

Then Maya said:

“She called me snitch once.”

I remembered footage.

Yes.

Then prison letters.

Chloe wrote to me eventually.

I had no-contact? Court order maybe. Letters through counsel permitted.

She said:

I do not ask forgiveness. Prison is not the worst part. The worst part is watching video of myself and realizing nobody forced my hand.

Good.

Then:

Ryan manipulated me, but I manipulated Margaret and Maya. Both can be true.

Accountability.

Then:

I heard you are seeing Maya.

How? Family gossip/public?

I almost stopped reading.

She wrote:

Do not turn her into proof that leaving me was right. She deserves relationship not role.

That annoyed because true.

I showed Maya?

Only with permission? It's about her. I asked.

She read.

“Chloe is right about one thing.”

“I know.”

“I’m not trophy.”

“I know.”

“Do you?”

I thought.

I had told myself marrying woman who saved Mom would be poetic.

Danger.

I said:

“I like how you argue about coffee.”

She smiled.

“Better.”

Then she asked:

“Do you still love Chloe?”

That was harder.

“Part of me remembers person I married.”

“That wasn’t question.”

“Yes. Some part.”

Maya nodded.

“Good.”

“Good?”

“I don’t trust people who rewrite whole marriage because ending awful.”

Wise.

Then:

“Would you go back?”

“No.”

“Okay.”

Relationship continued.

Months.

Not secret.

Maya moved? She lived own apartment.

I did not buy.

She completed nursing prerequisites and entered LPN program with grants/loans/employer assistance.

I occasionally paid dinner.

She paid tacos.

Power balance.

Then Mom’s estate.

She revisited $25k bequest to Maya.

Maya said:

“No.”

Mom:

“You can't control my will.”

Maya:

“I can refuse later.”

They bickered.

Eventually compromise:

Mom funded scholarship at Maya’s school for elder-care aides, not Maya specifically.

Maya approved.

Nice.

Then Carter’s father? Not relevant.

Then Saudi project.

I returned? I resigned long-term overseas assignment, transferred to domestic role.

Not because Maya.

Because Mom needed proximity and I reassessed.

Company accommodated.

No heroic sacrifice.

Then security.

I replaced hidden-camera system? After privacy concerns, we installed transparent cameras in common areas with everyone informed, Mom controlled bedroom privacy. Emergency sensors.

Good.

Then one night Mom fell genuinely.

Camera showed accidental.

She fractured no bone.

But Maya panicked because past.

I did too.

We learned not every bruise meant abuse.

Care.

Then Chloe parole? After 30 months maybe chapter 10.

Before that, appeal? She chose not.

Ryan appealed and conviction largely affirmed. No need.

Then a financial twist:

Restitution recovered only $126k of Mom’s $184k initially; rest spent/legal. Insurance/bank fraud recovery restored some. Mom was okay financially.

No magic all money returned.

Then Asheville house.

Mom decided sell.

I protested sentiment.

She said:

“It’s mine.”

Exactly.

She sold market price, moved proceeds to independent trust for her care and charity/grandchildren? Carter maybe only child. She chose.

No one controls.

Then she gave me sewing box.

“Keep?”

I opened.

Inside new note:

If Carter becomes controlling, remind him he is my son, not my warden.

Maya laughed.

I did too.

Then Mom asked:

“When are you marrying her?”

“Mom.”

Maya nearly spit tea.

Too soon.

We had dated nine months.

She said:

“Not because she saved me.”

Maya:

“Thank you.”

Mom:

“Because Carter is unbearable alone.”

Everyone laughed.

Then cliffhanger:

Maya received notice from nursing school that an anonymous complaint accused her of assaulting elderly patient.

History repeating.

Who filed?

Complaint included details only Chloe knew.

May you like

But Chloe was incarcerated.

Someone outside was still trying to destroy Maya.
