Chapter 9 - The Paternity Test Julian Chose to Take
Julian could have relied on Serena’s secret DNA report.
He refused.
It had been obtained without Elena’s consent and without Ethan’s understanding. Even if scientifically valid, it represented everything wrong with the last five years.
So when the yacht returned to Miami, Julian asked Elena one question.
“Will you agree to a proper test?”
She studied him.
“For Ethan’s sake?”
“Yes.”
“Not for court strategy?”
“No.”
“Not inheritance?”
“No.”
“Not your reputation?”
“No.”
Elena looked toward Ethan, who was watching ships from the terminal window.
Then she nodded.
“Okay.”
The test was arranged through an accredited facility with Elena’s consent and appropriate identification.
No tricks.
No stolen straw.
No Serena.
The result arrived several days later.
Probability of paternity:
99.999%.
Julian read the line once.
Then sat alone in his Miami hotel room and cried harder than he had at his mother’s funeral.
Not because the result surprised him.
Because it made five missing years official.
He called Elena.
“I got it.”
“So did I.”
A pause.
“What do we tell Ethan?”
Elena answered carefully.
“We tell him the truth in a way a five-year-old can understand.”
They met with a child therapist first.
That mattered.
Ethan had grown up knowing he had a father somewhere. Elena had never told him Julian was dead or evil. She had said only:
“Your dad doesn’t know how to find his way to us yet.”
Now that sentence felt almost prophetic.
During the conversation, Elena sat beside Ethan.
Julian sat across from him, not touching him.
Elena said:
“You know how we told you your daddy didn’t know where we were?”
Ethan nodded.
“Well, we found each other.”
The boy looked at Julian.
His eyes widened.
“You?”
Julian’s throat tightened.
“Yes.”
Ethan stared for several seconds.
Then:
“Are you sure?”
Julian almost laughed through tears.
“Yes.”
“Did you know before the boat?”
“No.”
“Mommy said somebody made you think you didn’t want us.”
Julian looked at Elena.
Then back at Ethan.
“Yes. But I also made mistakes.”
“What mistakes?”
“I believed things without asking enough questions.”
Ethan considered that.
Then asked the question Julian feared most.
“Why didn’t you look harder?”
No adult in the room moved.
Julian could have blamed Serena.
His mother.
Michael.
The divorce.
Instead:
“I should have.”
Ethan frowned.
“That’s sad.”
“Yes.”
Then:
“Can you still be my dad?”
Julian’s eyes filled.
“If you want me to learn how.”
Ethan looked at Elena.
She said:
“You don’t have to decide everything today.”
That was important.
No dramatic instant family.
No child forced to embrace stranger because DNA said so.
Ethan nodded.
Then took his toy jet from his backpack and pushed it across the table toward Julian.
“You can hold this.”
Julian accepted it with both hands.
“Thank you.”
That night, Julian returned to Chicago.
Not to resume normal life.
To begin dismantling the machinery Serena and his mother had used.
An independent audit of company access began.
Michael Grant reported himself to professional disciplinary counsel and hired his own attorney.
Serena retained counsel as corporate misuse allegations emerged.
Julian did not demand her arrest.
That was not his decision.
He focused on facts.
Then Marcus Bell called.
“We found another payment.”
Julian closed his eyes.
“To whom?”
“A Florida law firm.”
“Purpose?”
“Paternity contingency.”
“When?”
“Eight months ago.”
“Who authorized it?”
“Serena.”
“What did the firm do?”
Marcus hesitated.
“They drafted a petition.”
Julian’s voice lowered.
“For what?”
“Emergency injunction preventing Elena from publicly identifying Ethan as your son until private dispute resolution.”
Julian stared at the wall.
Serena had not merely planned to delay disclosure.
