Chapter 5 - The Investigator Who Watched Ethan Grow

The investigator’s name was Daniel Ross.

He was retired now, living outside Tampa.

Michael sent Julian the contact information.

By noon, Julian had him on a secure video call from the yacht.

Ross appeared uncomfortable the moment Elena entered the frame.

“I remember you,” he said.

Elena’s face tightened.

“I don’t remember you.”

“You weren’t supposed to.”

Julian felt his jaw clench.

“How long did you follow her?”

“Almost three years.”

Elena stared.

“Three?”

Ross nodded.

“Intermittently. Not every day.”

“Who hired you?”

“Initially, Serena Cole through a corporate-security expense account.”

Julian’s expression hardened.

“My company?”

Ross hesitated.

“Yes.”

That meant Serena had used Vance Hospitality money.

The issue was no longer only personal betrayal.

“When did it start?”

“Two months before the divorce finalized.”

Elena whispered:

“So before Ethan was born.”

“Yes.”

“What were you asked to find?”

Ross looked ashamed.

“Relationships. Financial distress. Pregnancy confirmation. Any attempt to contact Mr. Vance. Later, child information.”

Julian gripped the table.

“You photographed my son?”

“Yes.”

“How old was he?”

“First surveillance involving child was at about four months.”

Julian got up and walked away from the screen.

He stared out at open ocean.

Four months old.

Some stranger had photographs of his infant son while Julian believed Elena had vanished and perhaps already remarried.

Elena asked:

“Did you ever see me contact Julian?”

“Yes.”

Julian turned.

Ross continued.

“You mailed several packages. Visited his Chicago office twice. Once traveled to New York during a Vance Hospitality conference.”

Julian remembered that conference.

He had spent it drinking too much and letting Serena tell him Elena was probably living with another man.

“What happened in New York?” Elena asked.

Ross looked directly at Julian.

“Mrs. Vance waited outside the hotel for four hours.”

Julian’s chest tightened.

“I never knew.”

“I know.”

“Did Serena?”

Ross nodded.

“She told me to document whether Elena made contact with you.”

Elena looked at Julian.

“I saw you come outside with her.”

Julian remembered.

Serena had convinced him to attend a private investor dinner after the conference.

“Elena, I didn’t know you were there.”

“I watched you put your hand on Serena’s back.”

Julian closed his eyes.

“I was helping her into the car.”

“I thought…”

“I know.”

Five years of grief had been built from moments stripped of context.

Then Ross revealed something more disturbing.

“After Ethan was about eighteen months, Serena changed the assignment.”

“How?”

“She stopped asking about Elena’s relationships.”

“What did she ask?”

“About Ethan’s daycare. Pediatric appointments. Places they went regularly.”

Elena’s eyes sharpened.

“Why?”

“She said she was assessing potential exposure if paternity became public.”

Julian looked at Ross.

“Did you ever approach them?”

“No.”

“Did anyone?”

“Not that I saw.”

Elena asked:

“Did Serena know where I lived the whole time?”

“Yes.”

That single answer destroyed another lie.

Serena had repeatedly told Julian after the divorce:

No one knows where Elena went.

Ross continued.

“There was one time I refused an instruction.”

“What instruction?”

“She asked me to obtain Ethan’s medical record.”

Julian’s voice went cold.

“Why?”

“She wanted blood-type information.”

Elena stared.

“To prove paternity?”

“Or disprove it.”

Ross nodded.

“I told her that was beyond the scope of lawful public-source investigation.”

Good.

He had boundaries.

Then he said:

“After that she stopped using me.”

“When?”

“Two years ago.”

Julian frowned.

“What changed?”

“I don’t know.”

Ross leaned toward the camera.

“But before the contract ended, Serena asked me one final question.”

“What?”

“Whether Elena was serious about marrying another man.”

Julian’s stomach dropped.

He looked at Elena.

“Were you?”

She shook her head.

“No.”

Ross said:

“The man was Peter Lawson.”

Elena’s eyes widened.

“My supervisor.”

Ross nodded.

“Serena thought he was more.”

Julian suddenly understood something.

“This was never just about protecting my reputation.”

Ross did not answer.

He did not need to.

Serena had continued monitoring Elena long after divorce, long after Ethan’s birth, long after any plausible corporate concern.

Then the conference-room door opened.

The captain stepped inside.

“Mr. Vance, Ms. Cole has requested to disembark at Key Largo.”

Julian turned sharply.

“When?”

“At the next marina. About forty minutes.”

Elena went still.

Julian looked at the captain.

“Has she taken her luggage?”

“Yes.”

“Did she leave anything behind?”

The captain hesitated.

“Her cabin attendant found a shredded photograph in the bathroom.”

“What photograph?”

The captain held out a clear housekeeping bag.

Inside were torn pieces.

Julian recognized Ethan’s blond hair.

Elena recognized the background.

“That’s his daycare,” she whispered.

And printed in the lower corner of one torn piece was a date from three years earlier.

Cliffhanger: Serena had secretly kept a surveillance photograph of Ethan for three years—and the moment her role began unraveling, she tried to destroy it and leave the yacht.
