Chapter 8 - The plan for Emily

I had spent my career sitting across tables from people who lied professionally.

I knew what panic looked like.

Thomas Reed had reached it.

Evan hadn’t.

Not yet.

“You’re fired,” Evan snapped.

Thomas laughed bitterly.

“You can’t fire me anymore.”

Daniel stepped between them.

“Nobody discusses this further without counsel.”

But Thomas was already unraveling.

“He told me Emily would sign everything.”

“I did not,” Evan said.

“She wouldn’t need to understand it, you said.”

“Shut up.”

Security moved closer.

Emily sat perfectly still.

“What was I supposed to sign?”

Thomas looked at her.

Then at Evan.

“I’m sorry.”

“What was I supposed to sign?”

Evan shouted, “Don’t answer her!”

That told us enough.

Thomas swallowed.

“The amended trust documents.”

Emily’s face turned white.

“And if I refused?”

Thomas looked down.

Daniel answered carefully.

“The physician’s declaration could have been used to argue you lacked capacity.”

Emily touched her mouth.

I remembered every recent phone call.

“I’m tired, Mom.”

“Evan says I’m forgetting things.”

“Gloria thinks I should rest.”

“I’m probably overreacting.”

They hadn’t merely silenced my daughter.

They had taught her to distrust herself.

Emily stood.

Her legs shook, but she remained upright.

“You were trying to take Lily’s trust?”

Evan scoffed.

“I was protecting our family.”

“Our family?”

“You weren’t functioning.”

“Because I was caring for Lily alone!”

“You’re proving my point.”

Then he made a mistake.

He reached for Emily’s wrist.

She recoiled.

I stepped between them.

“Touch her again and this conversation ends differently.”

His eyes narrowed.

“You think your money makes you God.”

“No.”

I looked around the room.

“My money merely makes your lies easier to audit.”

Daniel’s phone buzzed.

He read the message.

“Police are on the way.”

Gloria screamed.

“For what?”

“Possible financial crimes.”

Then another notification arrived.

Daniel stared at it longer.

“Margaret.”

“What now?”

“Security found something in the garage.”

We followed him.

Behind shelves filled with baby equipment were several sealed boxes bearing Hartwell inventory labels.

Rachel opened one.

Inside were restaurant gift cards.

Hundreds.

Another contained premium liquor allocated to corporate events.

A third held electronic devices.

Company property.

Evan swore.

“That’s Thomas’s.”

Thomas laughed.

“I’ve never been in this garage.”

Then Emily pointed toward the back.

“There’s another box.”

It was smaller.

No Hartwell label.

I opened it.

Inside were photocopies of trust documents, Emily’s medical information, and several photographs.

The first showed Emily entering her obstetrician’s office.

The second showed her carrying Lily.

The third showed me leaving Hartwell headquarters.

Someone had been watching us.

Then I reached the bottom.

May you like

There was a photograph of my late husband, Robert.

Taken three days before he died.
