Chapter 14 - The woman who never left

Natalie Cross had supposedly stopped working for Emily four months earlier.

She hadn’t.

Evan had simply moved her somewhere else.

Investigators traced company reimbursements.

Hotels.

Restaurants.

Airfare.

A luxury apartment.

Natalie had traveled with Evan during “business trips” while Emily stayed home with Lily and Gloria.

Emily stared at the records without crying.

Sometimes betrayal becomes so large that tears are inadequate.

“He was having an affair.”

Daniel didn’t answer.

There was more.

Natalie was also listed as manager of Mercer Coastal Holdings.

The company scheduled to purchase the twelve-million-dollar house.

Using money diverted from Hartwell.

Emily laughed.

A quiet, disbelieving sound.

“He told me we couldn’t afford help.”

I squeezed her hand.

“He could.”

“He just didn’t want me to have any.”

Exactly.

Isolation had been part of the architecture.

Exhaust Emily.

Control money.

Convince her she was unstable.

Create medical documentation.

Alter the trust.

Move assets.

Then what?

Divorce?

Custody?

Or something worse?

We still didn’t know.

That evening, Daniel received authorization to release a limited portion of the preserved cloud archive to investigators.

One recovered voice memo changed everything.

Evan.

Gloria.

Natalie.

Three voices.

Gloria said, “She’s getting suspicious.”

Natalie answered, “Then stop pushing her.”

Evan replied, “Once the incapacity letter is accepted, it won’t matter what she says.”

Emily gripped my arm.

Then Gloria’s voice:

“And Margaret?”

Evan laughed.

“She’ll believe Emily signed voluntarily.”

The recording continued.

Natalie sounded frightened.

“I never agreed to hurt Emily.”

Evan responded:

“Nobody is hurting anyone. We just need her tired, emotional and believable.”

My skin went cold.

The supplements.

The sleepless nights.

The isolation.

Not random cruelty.

A strategy.

Then came the sentence that broke Emily.

Gloria said:

“And the baby?”

Evan replied:

“Lily comes with me.”

Emily stood so quickly her chair fell backward.

“No.”

I held her.

“No one is taking Lily.”

Daniel stopped the recording.

Police were already moving.

Within hours, Evan faced additional questioning and restrictions while investigators expanded the case. Natalie’s attorney contacted authorities.

She wanted immunity consideration in exchange for cooperation.

And she had something investigators desperately wanted.

A storage key.

Evan had given it to her six months earlier with instructions never to open the unit.

Police obtained authorization before searching it.

At 11:38 p.m., Daniel called me.

“Margaret.”

His voice shook.

“What did they find?”

“Files. Prescription records. Robert’s missing laboratory paperwork.”

I closed my eyes.

“And?”

“There’s something else.”

“What?”

“A sealed envelope.”

“Addressed to whom?”

Daniel paused.

“To Emily.”

“From Evan?”

“No.”

Another pause.

“It’s in Robert’s handwriting.”

My daughter’s dead father had left her a message.

And Evan had hidden it for four years.
