Chapter 13 - Emily Pierce

Emily Pierce was thirty-nine.

Older than me.

Daniel’s daughter from his marriage.

The family he chose not to destroy by acknowledging me.

That explained why he remained silent.

It did not excuse it.

Emily worked in insurance compliance.

At the same company that inherited Daniel’s old brokerage shares.

She had seen my name in a dormant-beneficiary review.

Then she recognized it.

“Dad had told me about you.”

I stared at her during our first meeting.

“When?”

“After Mom died.”

Seven years earlier.

“Why didn’t you contact me?”

“He begged me not to.”

Another person choosing his comfort over my truth.

She accepted that criticism.

Then she explained Noah’s claim.

The forged release triggered an internal fraud flag.

She quietly prevented closure.

She certified the envelope.

“You saved the settlement.”

“I preserved it.”

“Why not call me?”

“Because I was still investigating whether you knew about the forged forms.”

Fair.

Professionally cautious.

Personally brutal.

Then I asked the obvious question.

“Did you add Emma’s account?”

“No.”

“Did Kevin?”

Kevin nodded.

“I did.”

That part was settled.

Then Emily showed me something none of us had seen.

Traffic-camera stills from the road near Noah’s accident.

The red SUV appeared.

Behind it, Kevin’s pickup.

But five seconds later, another vehicle entered frame.

A black sedan.

My father Robert stiffened.

“Whose?”

Emily enlarged the plate.

Registered to Arthur Vale.

The attorney.

Everyone turned.

Arthur went pale.

“I wasn’t there.”

Vehicle registration records proved the car was his.

He claimed an employee used it.

Who?

His legal assistant at the time.

Melissa Grant.

The insurance investigator now handling Noah’s claim.

My stomach dropped.

We had trusted Melissa because she appeared to be reopening the truth.

Maybe she was.

Maybe she had been part of it.

Emily said:

“Melissa worked for Arthur before joining the insurer.”

Why follow my parents the day Noah was hurt?

Arthur finally admitted he had hired Melissa to monitor the storage property.

He suspected Robert might destroy trust records.

Melissa followed.

She saw the accident.

Then what?

She photographed it.

Why not report?

Arthur told her not to.

“Why?”

He looked at me.

“Because I believed exposure would reveal your adoption before you were ready.”

I almost laughed from anger.

Everyone had spent thirty-five years deciding when I was “ready.”

Then Emily placed a USB drive on the table.

“Melissa kept the photos.”

One image showed Mom’s SUV clipping Noah’s bicycle.

Proof.

Accident, not deliberate attack.

The next showed Dad jumping out.

The third showed Kevin running toward Noah.

And the fourth—

made everyone silent.

Emma was not standing beside Noah.

She was sitting inside the red SUV.
