Chapter 10 - My Mother’s Version

Mom asked to see me.

I refused the family house.

We met with attorneys present.

She entered looking smaller.

Not innocent.

Smaller.

“Why did you take me?”

Her eyes filled.

“I didn’t steal you.”

“Elise says she never surrendered me.”

“She did.”

“The signature may be forged.”

Mom looked at her lawyer.

Then back at me.

“I changed the document.”

The room went silent.

There it was.

Not every detail.

But enough.

She had received temporary custody.

Then discovered Elise was coming back.

Mom panicked.

She altered a copy before filing.

“Why?”

“Because I loved you.”

I laughed.

“No. Because you wanted me.”

She cried.

Maybe both were true.

That made it worse, not better.

“What did Dad know?”

“Not until later.”

“Did he want to return me?”

“Yes.”

“What happened?”

“I threatened to leave him.”

My father chose me.

But also chose his marriage.

Again, no clean hero.

Then I asked:

“Why forge Noah’s release?”

Mom looked ashamed.

“To protect your father.”

“From an accident?”

“From the fraud investigation.”

“You tried putting settlement money into Emma’s account.”

“No.”

I showed her the form.

Her face changed.

“I never filled in that account.”

Claire leaned forward.

“Did you sign Rachel’s name?”

“Yes.”

“Did Ashley sign as witness?”

“Yes.”

Ashley looked sick.

“Then who added Emma’s account?”

Mom shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

That was plausible because the routing number had been typed, not handwritten.

Someone else altered the form after Mom submitted it.

Who had access?

Insurance adjuster.

Attorney.

My father.

Ashley.

Then Mom whispered:

“Kevin.”

I almost laughed.

Everyone blamed the missing person.

But she explained.

Kevin had access to the claim papers after the accident.

“He told me he would make sure the settlement couldn’t be stolen.”

Could he have redirected it toward Emma’s account to stop Dad accessing it?

Maybe.

Then Claire interrupted.

“We found something.”

The bank account wasn’t Emma’s personal savings account.

It was a custodial account opened in Emma’s name.

Custodian:

Kevin Bennett.

Ashley stared.

“I never knew.”

So Kevin had created the account.

But why put Noah’s settlement there?

Kevin called before we could speculate.

“I was trying to protect it.”

From whom?

“Dad.”

Kevin believed Dad would take any settlement Noah received and use it to cover business debt.

He changed the destination account after Mom forged the release.

Illegal.

Still fraud.

But intended as protection.

Another terrible act justified by “helping family.”

Then Kevin said:

“Rachel, you still haven’t found the document Dad wanted destroyed.”

“What document?”

“The one proving who actually owns the storage company.”

I stared.

“It isn’t Dad?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

May you like

Kevin answered:

“You.”
