Chapter 9 - The First Time Vanessa Saw the Badge
In 2016 Vanessa entered Thomas’s office looking for grant documents.
She found silver-and-blue badge in velvet pouch.
Evelyn had temporarily returned it to father while credential was reissued.
Thomas caught Vanessa holding it.
She asked:
“Is Evelyn military?”
Thomas answered:
“No.”
“Then what is this?”
He said:
“Something she earned.”
Vanessa demanded explanation.
Thomas refused.
“It's not my secret to tell.”
Vanessa interpreted refusal as favoritism.
She photographed badge.
Later searched.
Found nothing.
Keystone remained nonpublic.
Then Evelyn returned months later.
Vanessa confronted:
“What medal are you pretending belongs to you?”
Evelyn, bound by secrecy, said:
“It's work.”
Vanessa laughed.
That moment hardened into family mythology.
Vanessa began telling relatives Evelyn liked exaggerating overseas humanitarian work.
Evelyn let it stand.
Why?
Because correcting would invite questions.
Thomas let it stand too.
Mistake.
Then 2022 program records began declassification.
Evelyn could finally explain broad role.
Why didn't she?
Thomas asked her wait.
Why?
He wanted tell Vanessa himself.
Did he?
No.
He died before doing so.
Evelyn delayed further because grief and clinic conflict.
Another silence.
Then Grant asked:
“So Vanessa didn't invent entire lie knowing truth.”
Correct.
For years she suspected but did not know.
After father’s death she found sealed Keystone letter confirming.
From that point she knowingly continued false narrative.
Nuance.
Then Evelyn asked:
“Why drop badge in glass?”
Vanessa answered:
“Because you wore it into Dad's office.”
“So?”
“It felt like you were finally displaying proof that you were the daughter he respected.”
Evelyn looked down.
She wore badge because it was anniversary of Keystone closure.
Not to provoke.
But she never told Vanessa.
Again.
Then Vanessa admitted something worse.
She had removed Evelyn’s service biography from clinic board nomination packet.
Original bio stated:
Dr. Evelyn Mercer — former federal medical continuity officer, overseas trauma-service coordinator.
Vanessa replaced with:
Independent medical consultant.
Why?
To weaken Evelyn credibility before land vote.
That was deliberate institutional manipulation.
Board chair discovered metadata.
Vanessa’s actions could trigger removal as executive chair.
She did not fight review.
Then Grant asked:
“Was blue dossier designed to make Evelyn surrender rights before board learned?”
“Yes.”
There.
Vanessa had planned close deal quickly.
She believed saving clinic justified.
But she also wanted win.
Then Evelyn said:
“That's what you need to admit.”
“I was trying to save Dad's clinic.”
“And?”
Vanessa stared.
“And beat you.”
Finally.
Then Evelyn nodded.
“Now we can talk.”
But another question remained.
Why did Thomas place original Keystone badge in Evelyn’s possession after program ended rather than federal archive?
Because badge was legally decommissioned and presented as service recognition.
Fine.
Then Grant noticed blue enamel had tiny scratch.
“I remember that.”
Evelyn looked at him.
“What?”
“Your badge was scratched when I saw it overseas.”
Evelyn shook head.
“No.”
“It was.”
“This scratch happened after I came home.”
Grant insisted.
Then Evelyn examined.
Scratch shaped diagonal.
Could Grant be conflating.
She retrieved old service photograph authorized for personal retention.
Badge pristine.
So Grant did not see Evelyn’s physical badge overseas.
He saw another identical one.
Who else had one?
Multiple Keystone medical leads.
Then Grant realized his recognition of Evelyn specifically had been assumption.
Codename proved program, not identity.
There had been at least nine badges.
One belonged to someone Grant remembered clearly.
A male physician.
Name:
Dr. Nathan Cross.
And Nathan Cross had later worked at Mercer clinic.
He disappeared from staff records in 2017.
Was that sinister? Could become misdirection/current. But central Keystone needs full meaning, Vanessa lies. Nathan may help reveal.
Evelyn knew him.
“He was my supervisor.”
“Where is he?”
“Colorado.”
Alive.
Retired.
No disappearance.
Why removed records?
Privacy cleanup after Keystone declassification.
Again no thriller inflation.
But Nathan had one fact:
Thomas Mercer asked him in 2016 to permanently remove Evelyn’s name from one particular Keystone after-action report.
