Chapter 1 - The Badge in the Glass

Vanessa Mercer did not ask Evelyn to sign the blue folder.

She threw it at her.

“STOP THE ACT. SIGN IT.”

The folder struck Evelyn’s shoulder and slid across the walnut floor of their late father’s private office.

Seconds earlier Vanessa had ripped the silver-and-blue badge from Evelyn’s collar and dropped it into her crystal glass.

Then she had kicked Evelyn’s ankle hard enough to send her to the floor.

Grant Hale watched from beside the desk.

Vanessa’s fiancé had witnessed enough tension between the sisters to assume this was another ugly inheritance argument.

Then he reached for his drink.

And saw the badge.

Everything changed.

Grant grabbed the glass, poured its contents across the marble table and caught the wet badge in his palm.

“WHO GAVE THIS TO YOU?”

Evelyn slowly rose.

She took it from him.

Pinned it back onto her collar.

“NO ONE. I EARNED IT MYSELF.”

Vanessa lunged toward it.

Grant caught her wrist.

His eyes never left Evelyn.

“THEN TELL ME THE CODENAME.”

Evelyn answered without hesitation.

“KEYSTONE.”

Grant went pale.

Vanessa looked terrified.

For several seconds nobody moved.

Then Grant released Vanessa.

“How do you know that word?”

Evelyn calmly picked up the blue folder.

“You asked for the codename.”

“That codename was classified.”

“Not anymore.”

Vanessa snapped:

“She’s lying.”

Grant looked at her.

“You told me Evelyn never served.”

“She didn’t.”

Evelyn glanced toward her sister.

“That depends on what Vanessa deleted.”

Grant’s expression hardened.

“What did she delete?”

Vanessa immediately pointed at the folder.

“This has nothing to do with her fantasies. Evelyn is delaying the clinic transfer because she wants money.”

Evelyn opened it.

The document concerned Mercer Veterans Recovery Center—the clinic founded by their father, Dr. Thomas Mercer.

Vanessa wanted Evelyn to sign away her voting rights in the property beneath it.

Not sell the clinic.

Transfer its real estate into a new holding company controlled by Vanessa and Grant after their marriage.

Grant frowned.

“You told me Evelyn already agreed.”

“She did.”

“No,” Evelyn said.

Vanessa’s jaw tightened.

Evelyn turned to Grant.

“You want to know why I won’t sign?”

“Yes.”

“Because the clinic isn't just sitting on our father's land.”

She placed one wet finger over a parcel number.

“It’s sitting on federal recovery property that was never supposed to be privately transferred.”

Vanessa went still.

Grant looked down.

“What recovery property?”

Evelyn answered:

“The place Keystone was built to protect.”

Grant’s eyes returned to the badge.

Vanessa whispered:

“Don’t.”

Evelyn looked directly at her.

“You should’ve thought of that before you put it in the glass.”

And for the first time, Grant realized Vanessa was not frightened that Evelyn might take the clinic.

She was frightened that Evelyn could prove why the Mercer family had been allowed to build it there at all.
