Chapter 12 - The Envelope That Finished Everything

The envelope Evelyn handed me the following morning had been hidden for nineteen years.
My father had given it to her attorney with instructions that it be released only if someone attempted to claim Hale assets through my marriage or children.
Mom had never known the condition existed.
Lily’s birth triggered it.
Inside was a notarized statement from Thomas Hale.
If you are reading this, someone has attempted to use Rachel or her descendants to gain control of my North Star interest.
My hands shook.
Dad had anticipated this before he died.
The statement named Denise.
Frank.
Elaine.
And a fourth person.
Arthur Mercer.
Dr. Mercer.
The fertility doctor.
Except twenty-nine years earlier, he hadn’t been a fertility specialist.
He had been North Star’s corporate physician and one of Denise’s secret investors.
Dad described Mercer as the man who structured insurance policies on key employees, moved money through medical consulting agreements, and helped disguise corporate withdrawals.
The same doctor Mark later sent me to.
Suddenly the clinic payments made sense.
They weren’t about creating Lily.
They were about monitoring when she would exist.
Mercer had been notifying Denise when my pregnancy became viable.
My stomach turned.
Mark looked horrified.
“I didn’t know.”
This time, I believed he hadn’t known all of it.
But he had known enough.
Dad’s statement ended with one instruction.
Find the original North Star ledger. Denise thinks Frank destroyed it. He didn’t.
“Where is it?” I asked.
Evelyn turned the envelope over.
A key fell into her palm.
Storage box 314.
We reached the bank with Samantha and two investigators.
The box contained a ledger, another cassette, and photographs of Dad’s damaged car.
The brake line had been cut.
One photograph showed Frank kneeling beside the wreck, trying to open the driver’s door.
Another showed a second vehicle parked farther down the road.
A medical emblem was visible on its windshield.
Mercer.
Then we played the cassette.
Dad’s voice filled the room.
“If anything happens to me, Arthur Mercer is not working for Denise.”
I looked at Samantha.
The recording continued.
“Denise thinks he is. She’s wrong.”
A pause.
May you like
“He is working for someone inside my own family.”
Evelyn’s face went white.
