Chapter 11 - The Son Who Knew Too Much

Tyler didn’t get far.
Police found him at a storage facility forty minutes later.
Inside his unit were boxes Denise had believed destroyed.
The oldest records changed the story again.
Frank Walker had committed fraud.
He had also planned to flee.
Two days before my father died, Frank withdrew $300,000 and purchased tickets to Mexico.
He never used them.
Why would a man planning murder simultaneously prepare to disappear?
The answer appeared in a cassette recording.
My father had recorded a meeting.
His voice came first.
“You stole from the company, Frank.”
Then Frank.
“I did. And Denise knows.”
“You forged Evelyn’s signature.”
“No. Elaine did that.”
“Who increased the insurance?”
Silence.
Then Frank said something that made Denise’s entire history look different.
“My wife did. And if you think I control Denise, you’ve never understood my marriage.”
The tape ended abruptly.
Frank wasn’t innocent.
But perhaps he wasn’t the architect.
Tyler eventually admitted he had hidden the boxes because he knew Denise had manipulated company records for decades.
“Why protect her?”
“She’s my mother.”
“So you let her forge my name?”
His face twisted.
“I forged your digital signature.”
I had expected that.
Then he added:
“But Mark gave me the sample.”
I looked at my husband.
Mark shook his head immediately.
“No.”
Tyler laughed.
“You emailed me Rachel’s signed tax form.”
“For payroll!”
“You knew what Mom wanted.”
“I knew she wanted proof Rachel was connected to the company. I didn’t know you would forge a guarantee.”
The brothers began shouting.
Samantha stopped them.
“What happened to Thomas Hale?”
Tyler became quiet.
“I don’t know.”
“Elaine thinks you do.”
“I was a child.”
That was true.
Tyler had been fourteen when Dad died.
Mark had been nine.
Neither could have orchestrated the crash.
But Tyler remembered the night.
“Dad came home covered in blood.”
My mother grabbed the table.
“Frank?”
Tyler nodded.
“He kept saying, ‘I tried to get him out.’”
The room went silent.
Not I killed him.
I tried to get him out.
“Out of what?” I asked.
Tyler swallowed.
“The car.”
Then he looked toward Denise.
“She arrived twenty minutes later.”
“What did she say?”
Tyler’s eyes filled with an old terror.
“She told Dad he had one choice: let everyone believe the crash was an accident, or she would make sure he went to prison for causing it.”
May you like
If Frank had tried to rescue my father, then someone else had caused the crash.
And Denise knew who.
