Chapter 8 - The Lie Beneath Callaway’s

I refused to believe her.

Caroline expected that.

“Sarah Bennett wasn’t investigating Meridian.”

She looked at me.

“She was auditing it.”

My mother had helped Anthony Callaway build a hidden financial network.

At first, Meridian moved money for legitimate reasons nobody wanted publicly connected to the Callaway name.

Political donations.

Legal defense funds.

Payoffs.

Then it expanded.

Bribes.

Blackmail.

Offshore accounts.

Anthony lost control.

Sarah wanted out.

So she copied everything.

Her key opened a bank vault containing the original ledger.

“Why give it to me?”

“Insurance.”

Caroline smiled.

“Parents love making their children inherit consequences.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“Let Mrs. Perez go.”

“Bring me the key.”

“We don’t have it.”

Caroline looked amused.

“Then why are you here?”

Because Reed had already sent Tommy to Mrs. Perez’s apartment.

He found the tin.

The real key.

We had it.

Reed stepped forward.

“Trade.”

Caroline agreed.

Too easily.

Mrs. Perez walked toward us.

Halfway across the warehouse, she suddenly stopped.

“Mara.”

Something in her voice frightened me.

“What?”

“I’m sorry.”

Then she pulled the real brass key from inside her coat.

I stared.

“How—”

Tommy reached for his pocket.

Empty.

Mrs. Perez had taken it from him before we left.

She turned toward Caroline.

“I told you I would bring it.”

My heart broke.

Mrs. Perez.

The woman who watched Ava.

Who made soup when I was sick.

Who held me while I cried after Daniel disappeared.

Working for Meridian.

Caroline smiled.

“Good.”

I whispered:

“Why?”

Mrs. Perez looked devastated.

“Because your mother asked me to.”

That made no sense.

Sarah Bennett had known Meridian would eventually hunt the key.

Before dying, she asked Mrs. Perez to stay near me.

Not to spy.

To protect.

For twelve years.

Mrs. Perez had pretended to betray me because she wanted Caroline to believe she had the key.

Then she threw it.

Not to Caroline.

To Reed.

Chaos erupted.

Reed caught it.

Tommy moved.

Daniel grabbed me.

Mrs. Perez dropped behind a crate.

No graphic violence.

Security rushed in from both entrances.

Caroline was arrested before reaching the exit.

But she laughed.

“You still don’t understand.”

Reed held the key.

“What?”

“Anthony never kept the real ledger in a bank.”

“Then what does this open?”

She looked toward me.

“Something beneath Callaway’s.”

My stomach dropped.

The forbidden office.

Again.

We returned to the restaurant before dawn.

Reed searched every lock.

Nothing.

Then I noticed the wooden horse Daniel had carved.

A tiny brass opening underneath.

The key fit.

Click.

The horse separated.

Inside was a strip of microfilm and a second smaller key.

Daniel stared.

“Dad used my toy?”

Reed almost smiled.

“He knew nobody would touch your ugly horse.”

“Shut up.”

For one second, they were brothers again.

Then the second key opened a panel beneath Reed’s desk.

A hidden staircase appeared.

We descended.

Under Callaway’s was another room.

Older than the restaurant.

Metal cabinets.

Financial records.

Photographs.

And an entire wall covered with names.

Judges.

Politicians.

Police.

Businessmen.

At the center:

REED CALLAWAY.

DANIEL CALLAWAY.

SARAH BENNETT.

And underneath them—

MARA BENNETT.

My name had been placed there years before I ever worked at Callaway’s.

Then Ava’s name appeared beneath mine.

Added recently.

May you like

Beside it was one word.

SUCCESSOR.
