Chapter 12 - Samuel Callaway

Reed remembered Samuel.

Barely.

He was three years older when the twins were born.

Daniel and Samuel looked identical.

Then Samuel became sick at nine.

Rare cardiac condition.

He died during surgery.

Closed coffin.

Private burial.

I stared at Reed.

“You people really need to stop accepting closed coffins.”

Nobody laughed.

Elena searched old medical files.

Samuel’s death certificate.

Signed by a physician connected to Meridian.

Thomas Ritchie.

Not a doctor.

Witness signature.

Daniel sat completely still.

“If Samuel lived, why hide him?”

Thomas answered when Tommy dragged the truth out of him.

Samuel had survived surgery.

But Anthony Callaway discovered something unusual.

Samuel had a neurological condition affecting impulse control and emotional regulation.

Treatable.

Manageable.

But Anthony saw weakness.

Worse, Meridian saw opportunity.

Two identical Callaway heirs.

One public.

One hidden.

Samuel became Daniel’s shadow identity.

When Daniel needed to appear somewhere without actually being there, Samuel could do it.

When signatures needed duplication, Samuel could provide them.

As children grew, the resemblance remained astonishing.

Anthony turned one son into a replacement part for another.

Daniel looked sick.

“Did Mom know?”

Reed’s mother, Evelyn, had died years earlier.

Thomas said she believed Samuel died.

Anthony lied to his own wife.

Daniel stood.

“Where is he?”

Thomas smiled.

“He stopped taking orders years ago.”

Samuel had escaped Meridian.

Then built his own network.

The stolen trust payments.

The Phoenix company.

The surveillance around Mara.

Samuel had been watching us.

Why?

Thomas didn’t know.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A familiar voice said:

“Mara.”

My knees weakened.

Evan’s voice.

But Daniel stood six feet away.

The voice I had loved in Phoenix.

The voice that sang badly in my kitchen.

The voice that told me he loved me.

I looked at Daniel.

“No.”

He understood before I did.

The man on the phone said:

“You finally figured it out.”

My stomach turned.

“Who are you?”

“Samuel.”

Everything inside me shattered.

I looked at Daniel.

“You weren’t Evan?”

His face had gone white.

“No.”

Samuel laughed softly through the phone.

“Mara, Daniel never met you in Phoenix.”

I couldn't breathe.

The man I loved.

The man who fathered Ava.

Had never been Daniel.

It was Samuel.

Reed grabbed the phone.

“Where are you?”

Samuel ignored him.

“Mara, I wanted to tell you.”

“You left me.”

“I had to.”

“You watched us starve.”

“No.”

“I had eleven dollars!”

Silence.

That hurt him.

Good.

“I sent money.”

“It was stolen.”

“I know.”

“By who?”

“Thomas.”

Everyone looked at the old man.

Thomas’s smile vanished.

Samuel continued:

“He redirected it to force Mara toward Callaway’s.”

My employment.

The restaurant.

Elena.

Everything.

Thomas wanted me close enough for Reed to eventually discover Ava.

Why?

To trigger the succession conflict.

To force Samuel out of hiding.

Thomas had used me as bait.

Again.

Then Samuel said:

“I’m coming for Ava.”

I tightened my arms around her.

“No.”

“Mara, listen.”

“No.”

“She’s my daughter.”

“You abandoned her.”

“I protected her.”

I nearly screamed at that word.

Then Samuel said something that silenced everyone.

“And Daniel knows why I left.”

I looked at Daniel.

He wouldn’t meet my eyes.

“What does he mean?”

Daniel whispered:

“The night Samuel disappeared…”

He swallowed.

“I was there.”

May you like

Then:

“I’m the reason he had to run.”
