Chapter 11 - The connection between Peter and Margaret
The connection wasn't romantic.
It was worse.
Margaret Mercer had worked cleaning offices at night before she became too sick to continue.
One of those offices belonged to Harmon Financial's predecessor.
Peter Whitmore was junior compliance staff there.
He knew her.
When Margaret developed pneumonia, Peter helped her apply for an emergency assistance program.
The request was denied.
Administrative reason:
Funding exhausted.
Except funding wasn't exhausted.
Money had already been diverted into the earliest version of the reserve.
Ethan's mother died while an off-book fund holding millions existed inside the same institution.
Ethan stared at the original rejection form.
Applicant:
Margaret Mercer.
Requested assistance:
$1,840.
Approved:
$0.
He couldn't speak.
Clara sat beside him.
Neither touched the other.
They didn't need to.
The entire strange journey had folded back onto the wrong-number text.
Thirty years earlier, Margaret needed less than $2,000.
Nobody helped.
Her son became a billionaire partly because of the rage that loss created.
Three decades later, Clara needed $50.
And accidentally reached him.
Peter had discovered Margaret's rejected case after her death.
According to his notes, it was the moment he stopped viewing the reserve as accounting misconduct.
People were dying outside while insiders decided where money “mattered more.”
He began collecting evidence.
Then vanished.
Why?
A recovered letter explained part of it.
Clara,
If you ever receive this, then I failed to come home.
You were nine when he wrote it.
Clara's hands shook.
Peter believed someone inside Harmon was manipulating police, vendors and charities.
He feared involving his family.
Then:
There is one man I trust with the records.
Initials:
M.M.
Ethan frowned.
“Mercer?”
He had been fifteen at the time.
Not him.
His mother's surname was Mercer.
But no adult male Mercer remained in his life.
Then Ethan remembered someone.
Michael Mercer.
His mother's younger brother.
Ethan's uncle.
The man who vanished from foster-system records shortly after Margaret died.
Ethan had always believed Michael abandoned him.
Marcus traced him.
Michael Mercer later changed his surname.
Michael Shaw.
Ethan looked at Dr. Evelyn Shaw's biography.
Her late husband:
Michael Shaw.
Suddenly everything shifted.
Dr. Shaw wasn't simply Ethan's longtime philanthropic adviser.
She had married his uncle.
