Chapter 10 - Clara’s father did not die where she was told

Clara's mother had always said Peter Whitmore died in a highway accident.

There was a funeral.

A closed casket.

Insurance money.

Years of silence.

Shaw claimed the truth was different.

Peter Whitmore had been a compliance officer.

Twenty years earlier, Harmon was smaller.

The reserve existed even then.

Not as fraud initially.

As an off-book emergency pool created after a hospital refused treatment to Shaw's daughter.

Several executives quietly donated.

Then donations became “temporary borrowing.”

Temporary became permanent.

Peter found it.

“He wanted to report us,” Shaw said.

“Us?”

“Sloan's father. Grant's predecessor. Me. Others.”

“What happened to him?”

Shaw looked directly at Clara.

“He took money.”

Clara laughed.

“No.”

“Your father agreed to disappear in exchange for $600,000.”

“No.”

“He chose you and your mother over becoming a martyr.”

Clara stood.

“You're lying.”

“I wish I were.”

Then Shaw provided a wire receipt.

Peter Whitmore.

Offshore account.

$600,000.

Date:

Six days before his supposed death.

Clara couldn't breathe.

Ethan moved toward her.

She stepped away.

“Don't.”

He stopped immediately.

That mattered.

For twenty years Clara had loved a dead father who represented the opposite of everyone who failed her.

Now he might have sold silence.

Then Naomi examined the wire.

“Beneficiary account doesn't prove he received it.”

Shaw smiled.

“Keep looking.”

They did.

The account belonged to Whitmore Consulting SA.

But its beneficial owner wasn't Peter.

It was Richard Sloan's father.

The money had been routed through Peter's name.

Another frame.

Then death records revealed the closed-casket body from Clara's childhood had never been DNA-verified.

Clara sat down hard.

“Is my father alive?”

Shaw didn't answer.

Federal agents ended the interview.

Hours later Marcus produced immigration records.

A Peter Whitmore, matching Clara's father's birth date, entered Canada seventeen years earlier.

Then disappeared from records again.

Ethan looked at Clara.

“We don't know it's him.”

“I know.”

She had learned that lesson.

Don't turn possibility into truth just because it hurts beautifully.

Then Marcus received a secure message from Grant Vale.

Scheduled before his disappearance.

One attachment.

A photograph.

Peter Whitmore.

Older.

Alive.

Standing beside Grant.

Timestamp:

Eight months ago.

On the back Grant had written:

Peter says Clara must never know who Ethan Mercer really is to this case.

Clara looked slowly toward Ethan.

He was as confused as she was.

But there was one fact neither had considered.

Ethan's mother, Margaret, had died during the exact years Peter Whitmore first began investigating the reserve.

And someone had linked their names in the oldest Harmon files.
