Chapter 5 - The night outside my study

The recording was incomplete.

Richard had successfully deleted most of the video.

But audio survived through another device.

My grandmother’s necklace case contained a tiny Bluetooth inventory tag I had installed years earlier after she gave it to me.

Nothing sophisticated.

Nothing designed to record anyone.

But its movement timestamp helped establish when the necklace left my safe.

More importantly, another device had captured sound.

The smart security panel outside my study.

Arthur played the recovered audio.

Richard’s voice.

Then Chloe’s.

Chloe whispered:

“Are you sure she signed everything?”

Richard answered:

“She doesn’t have to.”

Silence.

Then paper rustling.

Chloe:

“What if she checks?”

Richard laughed.

“She doesn’t have access anymore.”

My hands tightened against the table.

I remembered that night.

Richard had brought me tea.

I became unusually exhausted afterward.

I woke the next morning with a headache and no clear memory of going to bed.

At the time, he told me stress was making me confused.

Then signatures began appearing.

Asset transfers.

Board authorizations.

Trust modifications.

Documents I could not remember signing.

Richard used my confusion as evidence that I was unstable.

A perfect closed circle.

Cause the confusion.

Then use the confusion to discredit the victim.

But Arthur wasn’t making accusations beyond what the evidence established.

Not yet.

Instead, he presented hospital records from two mornings when I had independently sought medical care.

Both documented symptoms.

Both contradicted Richard’s narrative that nothing had happened.

Then came photographs.

Dated.

Authenticated.

My injuries.

Richard turned away.

Judge Hayes noticed.

“So these injuries were documented contemporaneously?”

“Yes, Your Honor,” Arthur replied.

“Why were they not previously disclosed?”

I answered.

“Because I was afraid.”

Richard scoffed.

I turned toward him.

“No.”

I corrected myself.

“I was terrified.”

He stopped smiling.

I continued.

“For years, Richard controlled my access to money, transportation, medical appointments, company systems, and eventually almost every person around me.”

Judge Hayes looked toward the fake psychiatric reports.

“And these?”

“Whenever I tried to tell someone what was happening, Richard produced them.”

I looked around the courtroom.

“Eventually people stopped asking whether I was telling the truth.”

Then Arthur opened a financial file.

“Which brings us to the assets.”

Richard’s face changed again.

Because the fake psychiatric records had never been his real objective.

May you like

They were camouflage.

The real operation was hidden in the money.
