Chapter 13 - The Red Folder wasn’t created for me

By the following stage of proceedings, the Red Folder evidence had changed everything.

Investigators and attorneys handled matters through their proper channels.

The divorce case continued.

But Richard’s control over the narrative was gone.

The physical archive Rebecca described had been preserved.

It contained dossiers.

Some ordinary corporate intelligence.

Some deeply troubling personal information.

My file was there.

So was Rebecca’s.

And several others.

But the oldest folder wasn’t mine.

It belonged to Richard’s father.

Charles Vance.

That surprised everyone.

Including Richard.

Arthur studied the date.

Twenty-two years earlier.

Richard had inherited more than a company from his father.

He had inherited a system.

Charles collected secrets to control business partners.

Richard modernized it.

Digital surveillance.

Data aggregation.

Medical information.

Psychological manipulation.

He hadn’t invented the architecture of coercion.

He had scaled it.

Then we found a photograph.

Charles.

Richard.

And Dr. Simon Hale.

Richard was nineteen.

Hale much younger.

On the back:

VANCE BEHAVIORAL RISK PROGRAM.

I looked at Richard.

“What happened to you?”

He stared at me.

It wasn’t forgiveness.

Understanding someone’s origin does not erase what they chose to become.

But for one moment, I saw something beyond the monster he had been to me.

A frightened boy trained by another controlling man.

Then Richard destroyed even that moment.

“You think this makes us the same?”

“No.”

“You think you understand?”

“No.”

“Then stop looking at me like that.”

I answered quietly.

“The difference is that you knew what it felt like.”

He stared.

“And you chose to do it to someone else.”

Richard looked away.

Then Arthur opened the final encrypted directory recovered from the mansion.

It had no descriptive title.

Only a date.

The day after our wedding.

Inside were subfolders organized by year.

Fifteen years.

Our entire marriage.

Richard whispered:

“Don’t.”

Arthur stopped.

Judge Hayes looked toward him.

Richard’s face had collapsed.

Not angry.

Not defiant.

Terrified.

“Please.”

It was the first time I had ever heard Richard Vance beg.

May you like

Arthur opened the directory.

And we discovered that Richard had been documenting me almost from the beginning.
