Chapter 13 - Maya returns to court

Weeks later, we returned to court.

Julian did not wear the gray wedding suit.

I noticed.

This time he sat beside new counsel.

No smile.

No Evelyn whispering behind him.

No Chloe pretending to be a family friend.

Maya was not required to recount everything publicly again.

Her advocate spoke for her where appropriate.

Judge Thorne had reviewed extensive material.

The financial investigations were continuing separately.

So were questions involving forged documents.

This hearing concerned Maya.

That was all I cared about.

Julian’s lawyer argued that a child deserved both parents.

I agreed.

But deserving a parent and being used by one were different things.

The judge spoke carefully.

“Maya is not property.”

Julian stared forward.

“She is not leverage.”

His jaw tightened.

“She is not a witness to be coached.”

Then Judge Thorne looked directly at him.

“And she is certainly not a financial instrument.”

Julian finally lowered his head.

Temporary custody remained with me, with any future contact structured according to the court’s assessment of Maya’s safety and best interests.

I did not celebrate.

There are no winners when a six-year-old becomes afraid of a parent.

Outside the courtroom, Julian called my name.

“Elena.”

I stopped.

He looked older.

“What happened to us?”

For ten years, I had imagined hundreds of answers to that question.

In the end, I gave him only one.

“You started believing love meant ownership.”

Then Maya took my hand.

We walked away.

But before reaching the elevator, Thomas Reed approached.

He looked frightened.

“There’s something you need to know.”

“What?”

“The money Julian moved.”

“What about it?”

Thomas glanced toward the courtroom doors.

“Not all of it belonged to the company.”

My stomach tightened.

“Whose was it?”

May you like

He hesitated.

“Your father’s.”
