Chapter 11 - What Evelyn knew

Thomas’s records changed everything.
The fraud had begun years earlier.
Not weeks.
Not months.
Years.
Julian had used false vendor invoices to divert company funds.
Some went toward personal expenses.
Some financed Chloe.
Some funded properties I had never known existed.
But the most disturbing documents were not financial.
They concerned me.
Julian had been building a narrative.
Emails described me as unstable.
Private notes recorded ordinary disagreements as “episodes.”
He had even encouraged Evelyn to document moments when I appeared tired, upset, or frustrated.
Motherhood had been turned into evidence.
Every exhausted morning.
Every argument.
Every time I cried.
Pieces of normal human life had been collected and distorted.
Evelyn knew.
She had helped.
When confronted, she defended herself.
“I was protecting my son.”
“From what?”
She looked at me.
“You.”
I almost admired the simplicity of her cruelty.
“You watched him frighten Maya.”
“I never wanted Maya hurt.”
“But you allowed it.”
“She misunderstood.”
Then Thomas played one of his recordings.
Evelyn’s voice filled the room.
“If Elena loses custody, she’ll eventually give up. Women like her always do.”
Evelyn’s face collapsed.
She had forgotten saying it.
I hadn’t even known she had.
Maya was not present for any of this.
I made certain of that.
She had already carried enough adult ugliness.
Later that evening, I found her drawing at the child advocate’s office.
She drew three people.
Herself.
Me.
And Mr. Buttons.
“Where’s Daddy?” I asked before I could stop myself.
Maya shrugged.
“He can draw himself.”
I almost laughed.
Instead, I sat beside her.
Then she looked at me.
“Mommy?”
“Yes?”
“Are you going to disappear?”
I pulled her into my arms.
May you like
“No.”
That was the first promise I had made in months that I finally believed.
