Chapter 8 - Two babies

Her name was Madeline Shaw.
Twenty-seven.
Single.
Eight months pregnant.
Caleb didn't know her.
Lorraine did.
So did Richard Vale.
Madeline was Nathan Pierce’s missing daughter.
Not dead.
Elias’s family had lied.
The woman who died in the accident was Rachel Morgan’s other daughter.
Nathan’s daughter had been quietly adopted as an infant.
Her records were sealed.
Vale found her before Nathan did.
And had been monitoring her for years.
Madeline was the second Rowan lineage.
Her unborn child could trigger competing trust rights depending on timing and interpretation.
Two pregnant women.
Two babies.
One $186 million estate.
And an attorney controlling the paperwork.
Vale needed chaos.
If my daughter was born first, Grace’s claim strengthened.
If Madeline’s child was born first, Vale could argue the second lineage triggered control.
So he manipulated both pregnancies?
Investigators discovered Madeline had also experienced unusual medical interference.
Changed appointments.
Anonymous supplements.
False calls.
Someone was trying to influence when two babies entered the world.
It sounded insane.
Until $186 million made insanity profitable.
Then the timeline delivered another twist.
Grace had been delivered at 2:14 p.m.
Madeline's son was born at 2:11.
Three minutes earlier.
Caleb stared at the records.
Vale had won.
Or thought he had.
Because Charles’s trust did not actually prioritize whichever descendant was born first.
That interpretation appeared only in a legal memorandum.
Written by Richard Vale.
The original trust said something different.
Equal protection of both surviving lineages.
Vale had invented the conflict.
Lorraine knew this.
She had spent years helping him maintain the lie.
“Why?” I asked her during a recorded interview.
Her answer surprised everyone.
“Because Charles asked me to.”
Before his death, Charles discovered the missing millions.
He suspected Vale.
But he also believed others were involved.
He asked Lorraine to pretend she still trusted Vale.
To help expose the network.
Caleb exploded.
“You let my wife nearly die for an investigation?”
Lorraine's eyes filled.
“No.”
“You canceled the hospital!”
“Because Vale was listening.”
“What?”
Vale had access to Lorraine’s communications.
She claimed she told the hospital my symptoms stopped because she needed Vale to believe his plan remained intact while she secretly sent Elias to me.
“But you left!”
“Because Vale was outside.”
That explained the man in her car.
He had followed her.
She staged the photograph to make Vale believe she was still helping destroy our marriage.
But why send it to Caleb?
“I didn't.”
Lorraine looked at Detective Cole.
“That message didn't come from my phone.”
Forensics checked.
She was right.
Someone had cloned her account.
The photograph was Lorraine’s.
The message wasn't.
Then Caleb asked the question nobody wanted answered.
“If Mom secretly sent Elias to save Hannah… who told him to leave his jacket?”
Silence.
Elias looked confused.
“I didn't leave it.”
I remembered.
Lorraine had carried something upstairs.
A dark jacket.
The jacket was already there before Elias arrived.
Which meant the most convincing evidence of my supposed affair had been planted in advance.
