Chapter 10 - What Grace inherited

Grace's DNA sample was recovered from Julia’s abandoned vehicle.

So were samples from Madeline’s son.

Vale wanted both tested.

Not simply for lineage.

For something Charles had hidden.

The original Rowan coastal property had been inherited through Charles’s wife’s family.

Lorraine.

Not Charles.

That stunned Caleb.

The $186 million estate everyone called Rowan wealth had actually originated with Lorraine’s family.

Her grandfather transferred management to Charles after their marriage.

Charles later placed it into the trust.

But there was a buried restriction.

Certain land rights could only pass to biological descendants of Lorraine’s maternal line.

Nathan was Charles’s son with another woman.

His descendants could receive financial assets.

But not controlling land rights.

Grace, as Caleb’s daughter, could.

Unless Grace wasn't biologically related to Lorraine.

That was the paternity trap.

Vale didn't need Caleb to believe I cheated forever.

He needed a temporary dispute long enough to substitute DNA evidence and claim Grace wasn't eligible.

Then he could force liquidation of valuable coastal parcels.

Developers were waiting.

Billions—not millions—could eventually be involved.

Suddenly $31 million missing looked like rehearsal.

Caleb asked Lorraine:

“Why didn't Dad tell me?”

“Because your father trusted secrecy more than people.”

That sentence landed heavily.

Everyone in this family did.

Including Caleb.

Including me, sometimes.

Then Lorraine admitted the ugliest truth.

She really did dislike me.

She really did call me dramatic.

She really had encouraged Caleb to distrust my emotions.

And when I called her during the emergency, her first instinct genuinely was to assume I was overreacting.

By the time she realized Vale's plan might be active, she panicked.

She tried to play both sides.

Sent Elias.

Canceled callbacks to keep Vale unsuspecting.

Removed evidence.

Made everything worse.

“You risked Hannah because you thought you could control the situation,” Caleb said.

Lorraine cried.

“Yes.”

No heroic absolution.

No convenient innocence.

She wasn't the mastermind.

She was still responsible.

Then Detective Cole entered.

They found Julia.

Alive.

She had surrendered.

And she wanted immunity.

Her statement implicated Vale.

But before signing it, she demanded to speak to me alone.

“Why me?”

“Because Richard doesn't fear Caleb.”

“Why would he fear me?”

Julia smiled strangely.

“Because you still think you married into this family.”

She leaned closer.

“You didn't.”

My stomach tightened.

“What does that mean?”

“Ask Lorraine what your maiden name was before your father changed it.”

I stared at her.

My maiden name was Bennett.

At least, that was the name I had used my entire life.

Julia shook her head.

“No, Hannah.”

May you like

“It was Shaw.”

The same surname as Madeline.
