Chapter 8 - Eleanor Mercer Came to Negotiate
Eleanor Mercer arrived at Audrey’s Boston townhouse without appointment.
She was seventy-one, elegant, silver-haired, and wearing the expression she used whenever she intended to call domination “family.”
Audrey did not invite her in until Sarah arrived.
Then Eleanor sat in the drawing room and looked around as though evaluating inheritance.
“You’ve made your point.”
Audrey almost laughed.
“What point?”
“You bought the company.”
“For investment.”
“You humiliated Julian.”
“He struck me in a ballroom and brought his mistress.”
Eleanor’s mouth tightened.
“Men under pressure behave badly.”
Audrey said nothing.
Sarah did.
“That is not a legal defense.”
Eleanor looked at her with irritation.
“I’m speaking to my daughter-in-law.”
“Not without counsel if the conversation concerns financial matters.”
Good.
Eleanor turned back to Audrey.
“Julian’s career can still be saved.”
Audrey leaned back.
“By whom?”
“You.”
There it was.
Because majority owner meant, in Eleanor’s mind, private ruler.
Audrey could simply reverse investigations.
Restore title.
Stop audit.
Trade company governance for marriage peace.
“I won’t interfere.”
Eleanor misunderstood.
“You don’t have to fire anyone.”
“I mean I won’t interfere with independent process.”
Eleanor’s expression hardened.
“Don’t be naïve. You own fifty-eight percent.”
“And?”
“You control the outcome.”
Audrey smiled faintly.
“That’s what Julian thinks too.”
Silence.
Then Sarah asked about Meridian Gate.
Eleanor’s lawyer should have been present.
Eleanor stopped herself.
“I’m not discussing business.”
“Then why are you here?”
Eleanor looked at Audrey.
“To remind you that destroying Julian destroys your own reputation.”
Audrey touched her shoulder.
Bruising almost faded.
“Is that a threat?”
“No.”
Then:
“It is how people will see you. Wife acquires husband’s company and removes him after discovering affair.”
That narrative existed.
Audrey knew.
Could damage Northstar credibility.
Could trigger shareholder litigation allegations of conflict if governance sloppy.
Eleanor had leverage.
Not criminal.
Real.
Then she offered solution.
Julian resigns quietly in six months.
No public findings.
Orchid abandoned.
Mercer family repays certain disputed vendor amounts.
Audrey does not pursue personal jewelry claims publicly.
Northstar gives neutral reference.
Marriage dissolution private.
On surface, efficient.
But Aurelia’s claims were not Audrey’s to privately waive.
“If company lost money, independent board decides recovery.”
Eleanor’s eyes narrowed.
“You could make them decide differently.”
“I could also misuse my control.”
Eleanor leaned forward.
“Power nobody uses is wasted.”
There.
Their difference.
Then Audrey asked:
“Did you know he was having affair?”
Eleanor did not answer immediately.
“Yes.”
“How long?”
“Several months.”
“Did you approve?”
“It wasn’t my marriage.”
“But you told me to be more supportive during same period.”
Eleanor looked away.
Then Audrey:
“Did you know he gave Camilla my earrings?”
“No.”
“Necklace?”
“No.”
Perhaps true.
Then:
“Did you know about Orchid conflict?”
Eleanor stopped.
Sarah intervened.
“Do not answer without counsel.”
Interesting.
Even Sarah protected Eleanor’s rights.
Process.
Eleanor stood.
At door she said:
“Julian loved you.”
Audrey felt something tighten.
“I believe he did.”
Eleanor looked surprised.
Then Audrey:
“He also believed love gave him jurisdiction.”
Eleanor left.
Later that day, Mercer counsel formally contacted independent committee.
Cooperation.
Documents.
Potential civil settlement.
Eleanor was practical.
She had realized stonewalling risked worse.
Then audit found vendor money to Mercer Advisory Trust had mixed sources.
Some were legitimate repayment for a loan Eleanor made to a vendor principal years earlier.
Some suspicious.
The total improper flow might be lower than $1.42 million.
Evidence became less cinematic.
More precise.
Good.
Then jewelry.
Auction house froze sale.
Necklace recovered.
Earrings voluntarily returned by Camilla through lawyer.
Audrey received them in sealed pouch.
She did not put them on.
Not yet.
Then HR completed initial report.
Julian’s workplace conduct at party violated respectful-workplace and violence policies.
His undisclosed relationship with Camilla created conflicts.
Expense irregularities under review.
Board, through independent committee, placed him on continued leave.
Not termination yet pending broader findings.
Camilla also remained on leave.
Then divorce papers were served.
Julian responded through counsel.
He contested nothing about dissolution itself.
But demanded equitable distribution of marital assets.
Northstar?
Prenup protected.
Aurelia shares acquired through Northstar remained separate company property based on structures, though valuation and marital claims required proper analysis.
No “majority stake becomes his because marriage.”
Then Julian filed a declaration claiming Audrey bought Aurelia partly to retaliate against him.
Potentially important.
He cited one conversation six months earlier.
Audrey had said:
“If Aurelia ever comes cheap enough, maybe I should buy the place and finally teach you how to run it.”
She remembered.
A joke during argument.
Now weaponized.
Context mattered.
Could create appearance conflict.
Northstar investment committee minutes predating affair discovery showed serious acquisition analysis months earlier.
Evidence protected her.
Then Sarah found something else in Julian’s declaration.
He wrote:
My wife has historically expressed no interest in managing Aurelia and repeatedly assured me she would remain outside my professional sphere.
Historically.
Audrey had said something similar.
Did that mean she deceived him with acquisition?
No.
Plans change.
But marriage contained expectation.
Then one old text from Audrey:
Your company is your world. Northstar is mine. I never want them mixed.
She had changed her mind when Aurelia became distressed investment opportunity.
Julian saw betrayal.
Not legal wrongdoing.
But emotionally, perhaps he had story too.
That complexity mattered.
Then Audrey received a personal email from Camilla.
No lawyer language.
I thought he was choosing me because I understood him. I’m starting to think he chose whoever told him he was right.
Audrey read once.
Deleted nothing.
Forwarded to Sarah.
No response.
Then a second email arrived.
There’s one thing about Orchid I haven’t told investigators yet because it will destroy someone who isn’t Julian.
Audrey’s pulse changed.

Camilla answered through counsel next morning.
