Chapter 5 - Camilla Asked for Immunity Before Anyone Offered It
Camilla hired lawyer by noon.
By three, her lawyer requested a cooperation meeting.
Not immunity.
Not yet.
But the fact she asked about protection told everyone she knew the audit was bigger than expense reports.
Audrey did not attend.
Correct.
She read counsel’s summary afterward.
Camilla admitted the affair began eleven months earlier.
She also admitted knowing Mercer Advisory Trust was connected to Julian’s mother.

Helix had patent applications not yet public.

The investor consortium had received confidential technical summaries before signing NDA? Some had NDAs.
Meridian Gate did not.
Who sent?
Julian’s office.
Potential trade-secret/confidentiality issue.
Then Camilla said:
“Julian wanted Helix outside Aurelia before Northstar could ever look at it.”
How did he know Northstar was interested?
He did not know Audrey controlled it.
But he knew Aurelia had been approached by an unnamed distressed-capital investor.
Northstar operated through advisers.
Julian tried identifying them.
Failed.
Then Camilla said something personal.
“Julian thought Northstar might be connected to your mother.”
Audrey’s mother had been dead three years.
“Why?”
“Because Helena Vance used Northstar as a project name once.”
Audrey froze.
That was true.
Before death, Helena had considered creating a holding company called Northstar Capital but never incorporated it.
Audrey later used name privately in tribute.
How did Julian know?
He had seen old estate papers.
So perhaps he had suspected Audrey’s financial world was larger than he admitted.
Then why treat her as decorative wife?
Because arrogance can coexist with suspicion.
He believed if Audrey had power, it would eventually become marital power he could influence.
Then Camilla’s lawyer provided copies of Julian’s voice messages.
One:
Once Audrey understands Orchid saves Aurelia, she’ll sign anything I put in front of her.
Audrey had never been asked.
Another:
She thinks marriage means I keep company stuff away from her. It’s useful.
Then:
If she ever comes back into corporate life, we have a problem.
That line cut deeper than adultery.
Julian had not simply underestimated her.
He had actively preferred her absent.
Then Camilla said she wanted to correct something.
“The earrings.”
Her lawyer looked unhappy.
Camilla continued.
“I knew by the party.”
“When?”
“Before Audrey arrived.”
Julian had told her.
Why wear them anyway?
Camilla looked down.
“Because I wanted her to see.”
There it was.
Cruelty chosen knowingly.
No manipulation excuse.
Then:
“I wanted her to understand he chose me.”
Audrey read that sentence without emotion at first.
Later, in her car, she cried.
Not because Camilla won anything.
Because Audrey had once invited her into her home.
Fed her.
Defended her when employees called her too aggressive.
And Camilla had worn dead mother’s earrings as a weapon.
Then Sarah called.
The jewelry investigation had progressed.
