Chapter 12 - The hearing-aid case

Not the hearing aids themselves.

The case.

Dad’s current hearing aids were modern.

But his first hearing loss began after the convoy attack.

Years ago, a medic gave him a small protective case for damaged earplugs and personal items.

Dad kept it.

For decades.

It sat inside an old tackle box in his garage.

The garage someone had recently searched.

They hadn’t found it because Dad had loaned the tackle box to his neighbor months earlier.

Police recovered it.

Inside the hearing-aid case was a tiny microcassette.

Dad stared at it.

“I never knew.”

Mason had hidden two things separately.

Key with Dad’s personal effects.

Recording inside an item likely to stay with him.

Redundancy.

The habits of someone who expected to die.

Specialists recovered audio.

Poor quality.

Voices.

Harrison.

Mason.

Leonard.

Others.

Arguments about shipments.

Then a discussion about the next day’s route.

Mason objected.

Leonard insisted.

Someone asked why.

Leonard replied:

“Because that’s where they expect us.”

Silence followed.

Then Harrison:

“What does that mean?”

Leonard changed the subject.

The tape did not prove everything.

But it changed the old story enough to trigger deeper federal scrutiny.

Dad cried when he heard Mason’s voice.

Quietly.

I had never seen him cry.

Lily slept against his chest while the past finally stopped being abstract.

Then investigators located Leonard.

He had not fled overseas.

He was found at a motel less than fifty miles away.

Alive.

Terrified.

And apparently preparing to negotiate.

The Vance empire began cracking from two directions.

My domestic abuse case.

The old contracting investigation.

Connected by the same men.

But Marcus still believed he could separate himself.

He claimed he knew nothing about Iraq.

Nothing about Leonard’s old conduct.

Nothing about Harrison’s crimes.

Then investigators recovered one deleted voicemail.

Marcus speaking to Leonard eleven months earlier.

“I found the warehouse.”

Pause.

“But there’s no way inside 417.”

Leonard answered:

“Then get the key from Grayson.”

Marcus:

“And if he won’t give it?”

Leonard’s answer was almost inaudible.

“Use the daughter.”

I stopped the recording.

Couldn’t continue.

May you like

Because “the daughter” was me.

And months later, Lily had become the next layer of leverage.
