Chapter 1 - The fingerprints around my throat

Six hours after Lily was born, I was still trying to convince myself I had imagined how frightened I was.
She slept against my chest, impossibly small beneath the white hospital blanket. Every few seconds, her lips moved as though she were dreaming about feeding.
I should have been happy.
Instead, I kept watching the door.
Marcus lounged in the visitor chair across from me, scrolling through his phone.
He had complained about the coffee.
Complained about the nurses.
Complained that my nineteen-hour labor had forced him to cancel dinner with a client.
But none of that was why my hands were shaking.
The reason was visible in the bathroom mirror.
Five dark marks curved around my throat.
Finger-shaped.
Marcus had put them there less than an hour after Lily was born.
He had leaned over my bed while the nurse was gone and whispered:
“The house is mine. The money is mine. And that baby is mine.”
When I told him Lily was not property, his hand closed around my neck.
Not long.
Just long enough.
A warning.
“Learn how this family works.”
Then he released me and smiled.
I said nothing because the stuffed bunny beside Lily’s bassinet had been recording everything.
Three months earlier, after Marcus shoved me into a pantry door, I stopped believing apologies.
I started collecting evidence.
Photographs.
Medical records.
Threatening texts.
Financial documents.
Messages from Harrison Vance, Marcus’s wealthy father.
Emails from their attorney discussing how to pressure me into surrendering custody.
Copies had already gone somewhere safe.
Marcus believed he was still dealing with the frightened wife he had trained to stay quiet.
Then the hospital door opened.
My father stepped inside.
Thomas Grayson wore an old denim jacket, work boots, and the same hearing aids he complained about every morning.
His weathered face softened when he saw Lily.
Then his eyes moved upward.
To my throat.
Dad stopped walking.
“Emily.”
I knew that voice.
“What happened?”
Marcus looked up.
Then smiled.
“I was just reminding her who’s in charge.”
Dad stared at him.
Marcus laughed.
“What are you going to do about it, old man?”
Dad quietly walked to the window.
Closed the curtain.
Then removed both hearing aids.
He placed them carefully on my bedside tray.
“Close your eyes, sweetheart.”
That was when Harrison noticed the faded tattoo along Dad’s forearm.
His face went white.
“Thomas… Grayson?”
May you like
Dad slowly turned.
And Harrison Vance began to shake.
