Chapter 8 - Lily's name on the mailbox

Lily denied renting it.

I believed her almost immediately.

The application listed an employer she'd never had and a phone number ending in 4412.

I knew that number.

My father's old office line.

The signature, however, resembled Lily's.

Another reused signature?

Probably.

Then Lily told me something she'd hidden.

Six months earlier, Dad asked her to sign dozens of papers.

“He said he was helping me qualify for an apartment.”

“Did you read them?”

“No.”

Of course not.

But this time I heard shame in her voice instead of entitlement.

That mattered.

I asked:

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because you always make me feel like an idiot.”

I almost defended myself.

Then stopped.

Sometimes truth arrives wearing an insult.

Had I?

Probably.

Years of being compared had turned me into the competent sister and Lily into the reckless one.

Eventually we both performed those roles.

“I’m sorry.”

She went silent.

“You are?”

“Yes.”

“That doesn't fix Hawaii.”

“No.”

“Or everything else.”

“No.”

But it was a start.

Lily sent every document Dad had asked her to sign.

One was a power of attorney.

Limited on paper.

Not limited in practice because several pages were missing from her copy.

Another authorized mailbox services.

There it was.

Dad had used Lily's real signature to establish the Bellevue address.

Maybe.

But then we compared dates.

The mailbox opened on a day Dad was undergoing knee surgery.

Could still be electronic.

Except login records later showed in-person identity verification.

A woman had appeared using Lily's ID.

Security image:

Blonde.

Late twenties.

Close enough to Lily to pass at a glance.

Not Mom.

Not Lily.

Then Laura saw the still image.

Her response came immediately.

I know her.

Name:

Madeline Pierce.

Relationship to the Carter family?

Unknown.

Except Laura had seen her once.

At Grandma Ruth’s funeral.

Standing at the back.

My parents told Laura she was a distant cousin.

She wasn't.

Matthew Carter had changed his surname after adoption.

His new surname:

Pierce.

Madeline was his daughter.

My niece.

The supposedly missing third beneficiary had not disappeared.

May you like

His child had been moving around us for years.

And she was using our names.
