Chapter 13 - Lily came home without them

Lily returned from Hawaii alone.
No champagne.
No designer bags.
She wore the same sweatshirt for two days.
I picked her up at Sea-Tac because she asked me.
For once, she didn't expect it.
“Where's Mom?”
“Maui, I think.”
“Dad?”
“Lawyer.”
We drove in silence.
Then Lily said:
“I sold the bags.”
I glanced at her.
“What?”
“The stuff I bought. Most of it.”
“Why?”
“To pay the hotel after your card froze.”
Fair.
Then:
“And because I don't want it anymore.”
That surprised me.
“I've been awful to you.”
I didn't rescue her from that sentence.
“Yes.”
She nodded.
“So have you sometimes.”
I smiled slightly.
“Yes.”
For the first time, we spoke like sisters instead of roles our parents had assigned.
She told me Mom had spent the entire vacation talking about “what Emily owed us.”
Dad talked about “keeping the family together.”
Neither ever asked whether Lily actually wanted to be the excuse.
“I liked being the favorite.”
She looked ashamed.
“I also hated knowing you'd always be the competent one.”
There it was.
Honest ugliness.
Maybe relationships survive that better than fake sweetness.
Then Rachel called.
Diane had been located.
Not arrested.
At a Maui medical center.
Laura Bennett was with her.
Both were alive.
Mom had suffered a panic-related cardiac episode during an argument.
I felt concern.
Then anger at the concern.
Both could exist.
Laura had the ledger.
And she refused to give it to anyone until all beneficiaries were physically present.
That meant me.
Lily.
Matthew's line.
My parents as trustees.
We arranged the meeting in Seattle under attorney supervision after everyone returned.
Mom entered looking smaller.
She still wouldn't look at me.
Dad sat beside her.
Matthew across the table.
Madeline behind him.
Laura placed a worn notebook in the center.
“Ruth kept two ledgers.”
Formal.
Private.
The private ledger documented every promise family members made to one another.
Money.
Land.
Debt.
Custody.
Then Laura opened the final pages.
A handwritten entry dated twenty-nine years earlier.
Robert agrees to raise Emily as his own. Diane will never disclose Samuel’s claim unless necessary for the child’s safety.
I stopped breathing.
Dad closed his eyes.
Mom began crying.
Matthew looked at me with pity.
No.
I stood.
“What does that mean?”
Laura looked devastated.
“Emily…”

The entire family tree shifted one final time.
“Samuel Pierce may have been your biological father too.”
