Chapter 4 - THE FIRE INSIDE THE WALLS

The investigator nearest the door touched his radio.
“Possible thermal event in the east utility corridor.”
The mansion’s alarm remained silent.
Exactly as it had during the guesthouse explosion.
Someone was disabling sensors from inside the system.
I gripped the remote.
“Activate manual containment.”
Victor laughed bitterly.
“You no longer control this house.”
I pressed a second recessed switch.
Steel fire shutters dropped through the east corridor, separating the server room from the rest of the estate. Internal sprinklers activated only inside the affected zone.
The mansion shuddered as pressure doors sealed.
Victor’s laugh stopped.
“I designed the original system,” I said. “You replaced the visible controls. You never found the independent safety layer.”
Clara ordered the medical team to move me away from the corridor, but I refused until the server status appeared on her terminal.
Temperature rising.
Smoke detected.
Primary connection lost.
Independent archive intact.
Whoever started the fire had reached the visible rack.
The encrypted backup remained protected inside a separate concrete chamber.
Mara stared at the floor.
“Who else has access?”
“Your father’s technician,” I said. “Dr. Reed. Celeste. And whoever has been using your medical identity.”
Victor’s jaw tightened.
That last possibility frightened him.
The east-hall camera recovered a partial image before the visible system failed.
A man in a maintenance uniform entered carrying a fuel canister and a Hale Maritime executive badge.
The badge belonged to Daniel Mercer, our chief operations officer.
Daniel had worked with me for sixteen years.
He visited me in the hospital.
He told me Victor was devastated.
He advised me not to review company records until I recovered.
And after I returned home, he repeatedly told Mara that my suspicions were symptoms of trauma.
He had not been protecting the company.
He had been controlling the information reaching all of us.
Clara pulled the financial records.
Daniel authorized the Ashford Risk payments.
He signed the yacht service contracts.
He arranged Lydia’s medical transport under false names.
Victor was the architect.
Daniel was the operator.
But the recovered call from Celeste complicated everything.
She was not speaking to Daniel.
She addressed the caller as Charles.
Victor’s face changed when he heard the name.
Mara noticed.
“Who is Charles?”
“No one.”
I looked at my husband.
“Your brother.”
Mara’s head turned sharply.
Victor had told her his younger brother, Charles Hale, died twenty-five years earlier.
In reality, Charles disappeared after being accused of insurance fraud involving a family-owned cargo vessel.
Victor claimed he had cut all contact.
Yet the shell companies funding the yacht shared an old address associated with Charles.
The brothers had not been estranged.
They had been working together for decades.
Charles built fraudulent ownership structures.
Victor supplied access to companies and insurance reserves.
Daniel made the transactions appear operationally legitimate.
Celeste helped convert stolen money into personal assets.
The guesthouse fire was not simply about Victor leaving me for his mistress.
It was part of a larger system of staged accidents and insurance claims.
Then the investigator reported that the east-hall fire was contained.
Daniel Mercer was found in the utility corridor, alive and conscious, attempting to destroy a portable drive.
He asked for legal counsel.
He also requested immediate protection from Victor Hale.
“Why?” Mara asked.
The investigator looked at Victor.
“Because Daniel says your father ordered the first explosion—but Charles ordered a second device placed beneath Victor’s yacht.”
Everyone turned toward the water.
The controlled smoke had cleared.
The yacht remained locked offshore.
Celeste, Lydia, crew members, and evidence teams were still aboard.

Somewhere below deck, a device may have been waiting for the moment Victor’s escape plan failed.
Cliffhanger: Victor planned to flee on the yacht—but his own brother had apparently prepared to destroy it with everyone aboard, including Victor’s mistress and the missing witness who could expose them all.
