Chapter 2 - THE WOMAN ON THE YACHT

Victor crossed the room so quickly that Mara barely moved aside.
“What did you activate?”
I kept the device against my chest.
“The owner authorization.”
“I own that yacht.”
“No. A chain of shell companies owns it.”
His eyes narrowed.
“And every shell ends with Hale Maritime funds.”
Mara looked between us.
“Dad said the boat was purchased through private investors.”
“Your father said many things.”
Victor reached for the remote.
The terrace speakers activated before his hand touched me.
A calm automated voice announced that the vessel had entered legal-preservation mode and that all communications, navigation records, cabin access logs, and onboard financial servers were being copied to independent custodians.
Victor stopped.
Mara’s face drained.
“What does that mean?”
“It means no one can erase the yacht’s history now.”
The exterior flares were not distress signals for a sinking ship. They marked the vessel’s location for the maritime authorities already waiting beyond the inlet.
The smoke came from a controlled containment system designed to force passengers and crew into visible muster zones without placing them in danger.
Victor had chosen the yacht as his escape plan because he believed the water would give him time.
Instead, it gave investigators a sealed evidence platform.
His phone rang.
He rejected the call.
It rang again.
This time, the terrace speaker carried the voice automatically because the remote had connected his device to the yacht’s emergency conference line.
A woman spoke.
“Victor, the lower cabin has locked. You said Evelyn no longer had authority.”
Mara stared at him.
I recognized the voice.
Celeste.
His mistress was already aboard.
Victor ended the call, but the transmission had been preserved.
Then another voice came through.
Older.
Weaker.
Terrified.
“Please tell them I’m not part of this.”
Victor went still.
Mara whispered, “Who was that?”
I knew.
Two years earlier, Hale Maritime’s chief financial officer, Lydia Cross, supposedly died during a private plane accident. Her body was never publicly identified because Victor claimed the crash conditions made recovery impossible.
Lydia had discovered irregular payments linked to the same shell companies used to purchase the yacht.
Three days before her reported death, she sent me a message:
If anything happens to me, follow the medical transport invoices.
I never received the full file.
Victor had intercepted it.
Now Lydia’s voice was coming from his yacht.
Alive.
Hidden.
And apparently confined inside one of its lower cabins.
Mara backed away from her father.
“You said she died.”
“She was unstable,” Victor replied.
“That isn’t what I asked.”
“She stole company information.”
“You told everyone she was dead.”
Victor’s polished calm began to crack.
“She disappeared because she wanted to destroy us.”
“No,” I said. “You made her disappear because she found the money.”
The yacht’s cabin logs appeared on a blurred security tablet held by the investigator waiting outside the living-room entrance.
Lydia had boarded the vessel six times during the past year under different medical aliases.
Celeste had used the same lower cabin.
So had Victor’s private physician.
And one more passenger.
Mara Hale.
My daughter stared at the record.
“I’ve never been on that yacht.”
Victor said nothing.
The access logs contained Mara’s biometric identifier.
Either she was lying—
or Victor had been using our daughter’s identity for something she did not understand.
Then the estate’s front security panel buzzed.
My attorney, Clara Voss, entered with two independent investigators and a medical response team.
Mara looked at them, then at me.
“You planned all of this?”
“I prepared for it.”
Clara handed me a sealed report.
The biometric records from the yacht were not linked to Mara’s fingerprints.
They were linked to blood and tissue samples taken during her childhood surgeries.
Victor had duplicated her medical identity.
But the reason remained hidden inside one restricted yacht manifest.
Its title contained only three words:
May you like
SUCCESSOR MEDICAL CONTINGENCY.
Cliffhanger: Victor had not only stolen Mara’s identity—he had built a secret medical plan around replacing me with our own daughter if the fire failed to remove me completely.
