Chapter 3 - THE SECOND PERSON INSIDE THE HOSPITAL

They transferred me through a service corridor while another contraction tore through my body.
Nurse Kelly pushed the bed. Grant stayed beside my head. Detective Reyes walked backward in front of us, one hand near his radio, watching every intersection.
The new room was inside a surgical recovery wing temporarily closed for renovation. It had no public waiting area and only one monitored entrance.
No one used my alias over the radio.
No one said maternity.
For ten minutes, everything remained quiet.
Then Reyes received the name associated with the stolen access code.
Dr. Elise Morgan.
Hannah’s older sister.
Elise worked in the hospital’s outpatient psychiatric department. She had no professional relationship with Silas, but Hannah had spoken to her about him repeatedly.
Elise believed Silas needed supervised help.
She also believed our protective measures were worsening his fixation by making him feel excluded.
Three days before my admission, Hannah asked Elise whether there was a safe way for Silas to deliver an apology letter after the birth.
Elise refused to provide direct access.
But she explained how hospital visitor screening worked.
Which entrances were staffed overnight.
How temporary patient aliases appeared in the system.
And which stairwell connected the public floors to maternity.
She called it general information.
Hannah passed every detail to Silas.
The access code itself came from a badge Elise had reported missing that afternoon.
Security found the badge inside an employee locker near the internal stairwell.
The locker belonged to a transport aide named Colin Price.
Colin was not part of our family.
He was, however, a member of an online support forum where Silas had been posting for months.
Silas presented himself there as a father being prevented from meeting his unborn child.
The baby was not his.
We had not dated in five years.
But he had rewritten the past so often that strangers began defending him.
Colin believed he was helping reunite a family.
He used Elise’s missing badge to enter restricted areas, then attempted to unlock maternity from inside.
Security detained him before he reached the ward.
“He says he never intended to hurt you,” Reyes told me.
“They always say that.”
“He says Silas promised he only wanted five minutes.”
“Silas chased me with a machete.”
“I know.”
“And Colin knew?”
Reyes looked at the interview notes.
“He knew Silas described an incident involving a tool. He says Silas told him you fabricated the threat.”
Silas had not reached me alone.
He had recruited people who found his story more emotionally satisfying than the documented facts.
Hannah gave him family information.
Elise gave Hannah operational details.
Dale shared the photograph.
Colin supplied access.
No single betrayal seemed large enough to explain what was happening.
Together, they had nearly opened my door.
A deep pressure moved through my body.
Nurse Kelly checked me and said labor was progressing quickly.
“We need to focus on the baby now.”
I nodded, but Detective Reyes remained near the door.
Grant lowered his forehead to mine.
“We’re here. She’s safe.”
Then his phone rang.
Dale.
Grant answered on speaker only after Reyes approved.
My brother was crying.
“I’m sorry,” he said. “Mara, I swear I didn’t know Hannah had been talking to him this much.”
“How much is ‘this much’?”
Silence.
Then Dale admitted Hannah had been meeting Silas in person.
She had visited him twice at a motel outside Ashland.
The second meeting happened four days earlier.
She returned with a sealed envelope addressed to my unborn daughter.
Dale had found it that evening and hidden it in his car because he was afraid to tell me.
“Where is the envelope now?” Reyes asked.
Another silence.
“Hannah took my car to come to the hospital.”
Reyes left the room immediately.
Security searched the vehicle.
The envelope was there.
Inside was no apology letter.

It contained a copy of my home’s floor plan, a key taped to cardboard, and a newborn-sized hospital bracelet bearing the surname Ward.
Cliffhanger: Silas was not trying merely to see me—he had been preparing to claim my daughter as his, and someone had already made him a key to our home.
